Baseball Ends Series with CUI in Dramatic Fashion

IRVINE, Calif. - The Regis University baseball team (0-3-1, 0-0 RMAC) finished out their road four-series with the Concordia (Calif.) Eagles in a Saturday night doubleheader. The last two contests were interesting to say the least. In the opener, CUI knotted a huge comeback to win 14-13. The closer was just as dramatic though as a rare seven-inning tie was called.

Game One | How it Happened: Regis scored seven unanswered runs through the four innings of play. A moon shot over the fence from graduate student Kyle Koontz put RU up 7-0, but CUI retaliated by scoring four of their own through the sixth.

But junior Matt Marlow and company had the hot hands. His solo dinger plus a double and triple put the Rangers up 10-4. Regis even made their lead as big as seven when freshman Zach Daudet scored off a graduate student Roger Riley single.

RU had it all but locked until CUI impressively scored eight runs in their final at bat. Three Ranger pitchers attempted to slow them down, but to no avail. The Rangers dropped game three, 13-14.

Game Notes: Sophomore P Dylan De Leon allowed just two runs through five innings of work. He also rang up five batters.

Riley and Marlow were each 3-6 in the batter's box. The pair also led with two RBI and two runs each.

Boyle was 3-4 while Daudet also had a trio of runs.

Michael May (0-1) was credited with the loss.

Game Two | How it Happened: Again, the Rangers opened the game with a 2-0 lead over the Eagles. Freshman pitcher Blake Shepardson allowed just one run in when it was CUI's turn to bat, making the Regis lead 2-1 heading into the second.

Sophomore Levi Padilla made the RU lead 3-1 when his single sent redshirt junior Colten Chase home. The third and fourth innings belonged to the Eagles though, they scored three runs to take their first lead of the day, 4-3 over the Rangers.

But in the fifth, Marlow rocketed off a big game-tying double, leveling the game at 4-4. The teams would battle it out for two more full innings before a local light curfew forced the game to end in a tie.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis will be back at it tomorrow in another doubleheader. They'll face Cal State San Marcos, first pitch is set for 11 a.m. MST
