Rangers outlast Cougars, earn 13-8 extra-inning victory in Game One

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team executed when it mattered most Saturday, striking for five runs in the top of the 11th inning to grind out a 13-8 road win in extras to opening up a four-game series against nearby rival Colorado Christian University.

It was a rollercoaster afternoon for the Rangers (8-10-1 overall, 2-3 RMAC) as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead, survived eight unanswered runs by the Cougars (5-12 overall, 3-2 RMAC) that sent the game into extra innings, before responding back in the 11th inning to pick up their second RMAC win of the young season.

"It was definitely an up-and-down game, but I felt our guys continued to do a lot of the little things right. You have to give CCU credit for its rally back. They strung a lot of hits together and that's baseball. It's going to happen," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "Even after CCU came all the way back, I thought our guys stayed in the game and were cool, calm and collected. They were mentally still ready to finish that game."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers started the afternoon in the driver's seat, taking an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI ground out by redshirt junior Colten Chase.

Chase, who finished 3-for-6 with three RBI to lead all Regis hitters, was again the catalyst for the Rangers in a three-run third inning as he stole home with two outs to bump the RU lead to 2-0. Two batters later, after a walk and a Cougars' error extended the inning, senior Miguel Marquez roped a two-run single to give Regis a 4-0 lead.

Regis would add two unearned runs in the fifth inning and ballooned its lead to 8-0 in the top of the sixth, courtesy of a two-run home run off the bat of graduate student Roger Riley; his fifth long ball of the season to tie for the team lead with junior Matt Marlow.

Colorado Christian would not go away quietly, though, as the Cougars pushed across two runs in the sixth, five runs in the seventh and received a home run from Eli Ludwig with CCU down to its last strike in the ninth to force extra innings.

The two teams traded zeros in the 10th inning, setting the stage for the Rangers' five-run eruption in the top of the 11th.

Freshman shortstop Zach Daudet got the rally started with a single through the ride side and moved to second on a Cougars' fielding error that allowed Riley to reach.
With two men on, redshirt junior Cam Blossom was called on to pinch hit and promptly laid down a beautiful bunt up the third base line that forced an errant throw by CCU pitcher, JC Watne.

The error allowed Daudet to score what proved to be the winning run and opened the floodgates for the Regis offense. Marlow and Chase each followed with back-to-back RBI doubles, and sophomore outfielder Levi Padilla added a RBI groundout, to put Regis back in front, 13-8.

"It was team offense for us in that 11th inning, starting with Zach getting on. It worked out for us to get runners on first and second. Cam is one of the best bunters we have on the team, so I felt it was the right situation to get him in because I knew the job would get done," LaComb said. "It worked out and was executed well and I'm happy for the guys that we were able to string together those quality at-bats when the time came because I think that's something we've struggled with in the past."

GAME NOTES: On the mound, true freshman Brady Gilmore picked up his first career win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. He limited CCU to just two hits, no walks and struck out four to put the nail in the 13-8 victory.

"Brady is starting to come into his own as a freshman and he's gaining more and more confidence each outing," LaComb said. "Our coaching staff is very confident in his stuff and believe he is going to get the job done."

The Regis pitching staff racked up a season-high 17 strikeouts on Saturday, nine coming from Game One starting pitcher Justin Kleinsorge in his six innings of work.

Regis had four different players record multi-hit games in Chase, Marlow (2-for-6, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Padilla (2-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI), as well as graduate student Kyle Koontz (2-for-6, 1 run).

UP NEXT: Regis and Colorado Christian will resume the four-game series on Saturday with a pair of seven-inning games. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at All-Star Park in Lakewood.

"I thought, collectively, we had a lot of guys play well, a lot of guys execute and it was a team win. Overall, the team morale is really good and we needed to get some momentum going as we head into (Sunday)," LaComb said. "I think our guys are excited and confident with who we have on the mound tomorrow. We have some adjustments to make ourselves, but we're in a good spot to performance well tomorrow."
