COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Back-to-back RMAC Pitcher of the week freshman
Kylie Harpman (7-3) broke Regis' all-time record for most strikeouts in a single game, she fanned 17 Mountain Lions as the Rangers (14-9, 9-1) took one end of their opening doubleheader with UCCS (9-7, 7-3).
Game One | How it Happened: With Harpman in the circle in game one, the Rangers offense was the encore to her arm. Graduate student
Allisha Martinez, who was coming off being named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA DII Player of the Week, hit her fifth homer of the season and scored the first two Regis runs.
Freshman
Rachel Williams kept it going when she sent a solo dinger over the left field fence to increase the team's lead to 3-0 before the first inning came to a close.
Dealing, Harpman pitched the full seven innings, allowing just four hits. Her pitching helped the offense settle and get it done at the plate.
Sophomore
Katherine Raper concluded the home run derby in seventh inning as she went yard, finalizing the 4-1 victory.
Game Notes: Regis had four runs off seven hits and ad a pair of errors.
Harpman's 17 strikeouts is a program record. She had just one earned run and two walks on the day.
Martinez led RU with two RBI.
Williams had a career-high 17 putouts in the win and her first career homer.
"Kylie (Harpman) was lights out today and it was awesome to see her in her groove. She set the tone for us and was a huge piece for our game one win. To have 17 strikeouts in a game and let alone in the RMAC is amazing. So proud of her for setting that record. She has worked really hard with coach [Regis graduate assistant coach] Romero" said Head Coach
Nicole Thompson. "Our bats came when we needed them the first game. And Rachel's first career home run was sugar on top."
Game Two | How it Happened: Game two was another low-scoring affair as sophomore
Megan Loveland (4-5) and junior
Abby Covington pitched for RU.
Senior
Jessi Case's solo home run in the first inning was the team's first run of the closer, but UCCS took a quick 4-1 lead with a grand slam in their at-bat.
Case kept Regis close though, she had a RBI double in the second, but a lack of offense from both teams kept the game at 2-4 until the seventh inning.
Case had another solo shot in the team's final at-bat to make the score 3-4, but the late comeback couldn't be completed as the final two Regis outs were retired in succession.
"It hurts to fall short, but we need to learn from it, make minor adjustments and get that back tomorrow. Abby (Covington) in relief really kept us in that ball game and came up big on the mound for us. Then Jessi (Case) was awesome at the plate and gave us our three RBI. But, we left way too many runners on base and we're missing a timely hit. We need to refocus for tomorrow and finish this series on top."
Game Notes: RU scored three runs off six hits and had one error.
Case's eight homers, 33 RBI and 21 stolen bases leads the RMAC. Today, she was a perfect 4-4 in the batter's box and had three RBI.
Sophomore
Carryn Leto had a game-high seven putouts while freshman
Miia Campos led with two assists.
Up Next For The Rangers: The two teams will head back to Mountain Lion Field tomorrow as the series continues. The first game will commence at 11 a.m
