Game Recap: Softball |

Rangers split with Mountain Lions after two extra-inning thrillers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Regis University softball (15-10, 10-2) team wrapped up their four-game series versus the UCCS Mountain Lions (10-8, 8-4)  on Sunday at Mountain Lion Field. Both games required extras to determine a winner - Regis took game three after a late homer, but fell in the closer.

Game One | How it Happened: After the team homered five times yesterday, the Rangers picked up where they left off as graduate student Allisha Martinez went yard in the first innings, racking up a trio of RBI.

With the 3-0 lead, Regis added another run in the first when freshman Rachel Williams scored on a fielder's choice.

But even with the four run lead, UCCS came back with steady scoring throughout the next six innings. Even with the game in extras after the Mountain Lions tied the game in the sixth, freshman RHP Kylie Harpman (8-4) didn't back down.

She was coming off a 17-strikeout performance the previous day - a school record. She stayed and completed the game, ringing up three batters in the eighth and ninth.

Williams gave the team a late lead in the ninth when she had a two RBI dinger and her second of the weekend.

Harpman disposed of the final three outs in order - she ended the day with 132 pitches tossed. RU propelled past UCCS for a 6-4 win.

Game Notes: Regis scored six runs off three hits and had one error.

Sophomore Katherine Raper led at the plate with a 2-5 performance.

Martinez had a game-high three RBI and scored once.

Williams hit her second dinger of her Regis career and had two RBI. She also scored twice and had a team-high 11 putouts.

Freshman Jordan Simonsgaard was 1-4 and had a RBI.

Senior Madison Flores led with three assists.

Game Two | How it Happened: Game two saw four Ranger pitchers make appearances: Junior Abby Covington started while junior Kara Rodeheaver and sophomore Katherine Raper made appearances. Harpman was called in to finish out the last two innings.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings of play until senior Jessi Case kicked things off with a RBI double.

In the next at-bat, freshman Miia Campos hit a two RBI bomb over the fence, scoring herself and Case to give RU the 3-0 lead.

UCCS matched though with three runs of their own in their at-bat, tying the game at 3-3.

But in the fourth, the Rangers had a bases-juiced walk, a sac fly and a run scored via UCCS error to put them back up 7-3.

However, the Mountain Lions refused to go away quietly as they scored four runs in the fourth and sixth to again tie the game at 7-7.

Again, the teams went to extras to settle things. In the eighth, the Rangers couldn't get a run across the plate while UCCS knocked a RBI single to end the game in walk-off fashion.

Game Notes: Regis scored seven runs off five hits and had two errors.

Campos led RU with two RBI and a 1-3 performance.

Case was closer behind as she was 1-4 and had one RBI.

Sophomore Carryn Leto had a game-high 10 putouts while Martniez had three assists.

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis will play a quick non-conference doubleheader versus Washburn this week. Tuesday will feature two games starting at noon and 2 p.m. at the Regis Softball Field.
