Regis earns 6-2 victory in Game Four, clinch 3-1 series win against CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Early offense and a gem of a start turned in by junior pitcher Porter Hardcastle propelled the Regis University baseball team to a complete 6-2 victory over Colorado Christian on Monday and secured the Rangers first RMAC series win of the young 2022 season.

Regis (10-11-1 overall, 4-4 RMAC) ambushed the Cougars (6-14 overall, 4-4 RMAC) early on with a five-run second inning — all coming with two outs in the inning — to provide more than enough run support for the veteran Hardcastle.

The right-handed sinkerballer twirled seven strong innings en route to his first win of season, missing barrels and limiting the CCU lineup to two runs on four hits, two strikeouts while inducing eight ground ball outs.

"Porter has a very good arm and he's an established starter in our program," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "He's a guy that we have tremendous confidence in. Being a ground ball pitcher playing on a turf infield, he did a great job keeping the ball down and letting his defense work behind him."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The second inning started innocently enough for the Rangers. After two quick fly outs, Regis exploded for five runs on six straight hits; punctuated by a two-run home run from freshman shortstop Zach Daudet.

Redshirt junior Colten Chase got the rally started with a single to left-center. Graduate student Kyle Koontz followed with a ground-rule double to put two Rangers in scoring position for fellow graduate student Andy Beyene.

Beyene reached on a RBI bunt single, advanced to second on a double steal that scored Koontz, and trotted home on the RBI double from sophomore Levi Padilla to make it a 3-0 Regis lead and set the stage for Daudet's second home run of the season.

"Playing with a lead is really important for our offense. It frees us up to do a lot more things than when we're playing from behind. We felt the momentum shift to our side that inning and Porter took it from there," LaComb said.

A RBI triple and sacrifice fly for CCU in the third to trim the lead to 5-2 was the lone hiccup Hardcastle would face as he retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced between the fourth and seventh innings.

Regis would add an insurance run in the eighth inning on a RBI single from Beyene, while the right-handed duo of junior Luke Douthitt and senior Michael May each recorded scoreless innings out of the bullpen to seal the 6-2 final.

GAME NOTES: The Rangers finished with 13 hits from eight different players. Daudet (2-for-5), junior Matt Marlow (2-for-5), Chase (2-for-4), Padilla (2-for-4) and Beyene (2-for-4) all recorded multi-hit games.

As a team, the Rangers finished the four-game series with just three combined errors, 34 strikeouts as a pitching staff, and produced 30 runs on 39 hits.

"We had a handful of players who showed up and played well this weekend who maybe hadn't gotten off to great starts during the non-conference season," LaComb said. "This series helped a lot of guys' confidence and gave our lineup a little bit more depth. The fact we pitched and played defense better this series, and had a number of guys step up offensively, just builds our confidence as we head into this next weekend."

UP NEXT: The Rangers return home to host a four-game set against Adams State University (2-12 overall, 0-4 RMAC), beginning with a pair of seven-inning games against the Grizzlies this Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field.

Regis and Adams State will then conclude the series with a nine-inning game on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) and a nine-inning game on Sunday (12 p.m.).
