Rangers launch four home runs, cruise to 15-5 victory over Adams State in Game Two

DENVER, Colo. — Cheered on by the largest home crowd of the young season, the Regis University baseball team grabbed a stranglehold in its four-game series against Adams State University, taking a 2-0 lead with a convincing 15-5 win over the Grizzlies on Saturday in Game Two.

With the win, Regis (12-11-1 overall, 6-4 RMAC) moves back above .500 for the first time this spring and drop the Grizzlies to 2-14 overall, 0-6 RMAC heading into Sunday's doubleheader.

The Rangers produced 15 runs on 11 hits — including four home runs — to send dozens of young fans from the Brighton Youth Baseball and Softball Association in attendance home happy on what was a gorgeous sunny afternoon in Denver.

"It was great to be able to go up 2-0 in the series. We definitely have the momentum right now going into tomorrow and I think what I'm most excited about is that we have different guys get the starts (Saturday) and they had some really good performances," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "In the two wins, we've had different guys each day step up and that has been very exciting."

HOW IT HAPPENED: After being held hitless by the Adams State starter Cesar Loma through the first three innings, the Rangers got after the right-hander in the fourth; the big blow being a two-run home run off the bat of graduate student Andy Beyene.

Beyene's first tank of the 2022 season put the Rangers up 2-1 and they'd add a third run two-batters later on the RBI double to center from redshirt freshman Joey Cicini.

Adams State took advantage of the lone Regis error on the afternoon in the top of the fifth as ASU scored three unearned runs with two outs to briefly take the lead at 4-3.

Regis responded with its own crooked number in the home-half of the inning, though, as the team plated six runs to balloon its lead to 10-4.

Sophomore catcher Reagan Guthrie led off the fifth with his first home run of the season — third of his career — while graduate student Kyle Koontz launched a three-run shot later in the inning for his second home run of the year and 11th of his career.

"Andy and Kyle are senior leaders and it was only a matter of time before things started clicking for them, offensively," LaComb said of Koontz and Beyene, who combined for four hits, five runs and eight driven in Saturday.

"Despite a little bit of a slow start, we've kept giving them opportunities and kept faith that they were going to come out of it. They're great teammates and bring a lot of energy and maturity to our group. I'm really happy to see them rewarded for their hard work at the plate."

The Rangers' fourth home run of the day came in the bottom of the eighth inning when true freshman Wes Miller hammered his first career home run, putting the bow on 15-5 victory.

"Reagan and Wes are two guys who have been playing backup roles for us this year and they've just kept working and have been great teammates. It felt like it was just a matter of time for those two to break out as well," LaComb said. "I'm very happy with the at-bats Reagan put together, thought he also caught well behind the plate, then Wes getting his first college home run was special. Guys love Wes. He has a great personality and guys gravitate to him. You can see why the guys in the dugout got so excited for him."

GAME NOTES: Sophomore right-hander Dylan De Leon notched his second win over the season, evening his record at 2-2, after posting a quality start on Saturday. He limited Adams State to four runs — just one earned — while scattering nine hits and striking out four.

Freshman shortstop Zach Daudet finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI double; his RMAC leading 12th double of the season.

In addition to Koontz and Beyene, Guthrie (2-for-3, 3 runs, 1 RBI) also posted a multi-hit game in his spot start behind the plate.

UP NEXT: The Rangers conclude their four-game series against the Grizzlies with a pair of seven-inning games on Sunday.

The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
