Red hot Rangers complete four-game sweep of Adams State

DENVER, Colo. — As the spring weather has started to warm up, so too has the Regis University baseball team as the Rangers polished off a four-game sweep of Adams State University on Sunday, earning wins of 6-4 and 19-11, respectively.

With the victories over the Grizzlies (2-16 overall, 0-8 RMAC), the Rangers (14-11 overall, 8-4 RMAC) have now won seven of their last eight games and vaulted up to third in the RMAC standings; just one game back of co-leaders Colorado Mesa and CSU Pueblo.

"Our guys had the momentum after taking the previous two games of the series and we were really excited to play two today. I'm glad we were able to get that Game Three win out of the way — it was a really close game — but we were able to find a way," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "That allowed us to relax a little bit in the second game and that translated to being able to build a big early lead. We're excited about the amount of guys who contributed this weekend and we feel we're in a very good spot heading into next week."

GAME ONE: The win in Game One of Sunday's doubleheader took a collective effort from the Rangers as five different players drove in at least one run.

Trailing 1-0 heading to the third inning, freshman shortstop Zach Daudet got the party started with a two-run moonshot to left center, scoring junior infielder Austin Vaught, for his third home run of the season.

Adams State briefly tied the game again in the top of the fourth inning at 2-2, but the Rangers immediately responded with a three-spot in the home half of the frame with RBI singles from Trey Harrison and Vaught, as well as a run-scoring walk earned by graduate student Andy Beyene.

With the lead trimmed to one at 5-4 in the fifth, sophomore catcher Reagan Guthrie came up with a clutch two-out RBI single to provide the Rangers with a 6-4 lead entering the late innings.

Regis right-hander Porter Hardcastle worked a clean sixth inning, finishing the day with six innings pitched allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits while striking out five. He earned his second straight win while sophomore Logan Deskin came out of the pen to work a 1-2-3 seventh inning for his first career save.

"These are the type of starts Porter is capable of having. He was off to a little bit of a rough start this season, but we feel like he's back to normal," LaComb said. "Today was the kind of start we've come to expect from Porter. He's talented and capable to produce great starts week in and week out. It's great to see him put together two strong starts in a row."

GAME TWO: As for Game Two of the doubleheader, the Rangers quickly removed any potential close-game drama as they struck for five runs in the first inning, seven runs in the second and three runs in the third to build a commanding 15-0 lead through the game's first three innings.

"I think when we play with a lead, our offense can function a little better, we're able to do some different things, and it allows our pitchers to relax a little more. Getting on the scoreboard early is a huge deal for us," said LaComb about the early offense. "We play with more aggressiveness and a little more freely."

Regis hitters would finish the game with 19 runs on 12 hits, including four more home runs to give the team nine long balls for the series.

The first home run of the day was a memorable one at that as redshirt freshman Joey Cicini blistered an 0-1 fastball deep over the left-center field fence for a grand slam and his first career home run, giving the Rangers a 5-0 lead before the first out of the inning was ever recorded.

"You love to see good things happen to good people and Joey is a great teammate," LaComb said of Cicini. "When guys respect the game, play the game hard and treat people the right way; when they get their opportunities to play and capitalize, you feel great for them. You could see how excited our dugout got for him."

Guthrie homered for the second time in as many days in the second inning and junior first baseman Matt Marlow launched his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning to help build the 15-0 advantage. Marlow finished Game Two 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a game-high six RBI.

Redshirt sophomore Brooks Browning got into the act in the fifth inning as he too hit his first career home run; a two-run blast that scored graduate student outfielder McKay Banks.

On the mound, sophomore left-hander Ethan Sloan improved to a spotless 3-0 on the season in just his second start, tossing an effective 4.2 innings where he allowed four runs on five hits and struck out three.

UP NEXT: The red hot Rangers will now prepare to head out on the road for eight straight games, starting next weekend for a four-game series against New Mexico Highlands University. Game One of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 25 in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
