Rangers extend win streak to seven with 12-11 road win over New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Regis University baseball team kept right on rolling Friday in its series opener against New Mexico Highlands, rallying back from a pair of three-run deficits and hanging on during a wild ninth to secure a 12-11 victory.

The win marked seven in a row for the red hot Rangers (15-11-1 overall, 9-4 RMAC), who have now crept within a half-game of Colorado Mesa for second in the RMAC standings and are just one game back of conference leaders CSU Pueblo.

"I'm very happy we were able to get the win. It was tough playing conditions, lots of offense, and I was very pleased to see how the guys bounced back after getting down early," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "We had a big six-run seventh inning where we really strung a lot of great at-bats together, were getting hits with runners in scoring position, and it was exciting to see a lot of guys come through."

HOW IT HAPPENED: New Mexico Highlands (5-20 overall, 3-10 RMAC) had the upper-hand early on, taking a 4-2 lead in the third and maintaining a three-run lead at 6-3 into the late innings.

The script flipped in the seventh, though as the Rangers offense exploded for six runs on seven hits; including four RBI singles and a run scoring double off the bat of graduate student Brevin Owen.

Regis would add an insurance run in the eighth on the second solo home run for junior first baseman Matt Marlow. He finished the afternoon a staggering 4-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and three driven in.

The Rangers plated two more unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 12-6 lead, but had to survive a furious comeback by the Cowboys in the home-half of the inning. NMHU scored five runs on three hits and put the potential tying run in scoring position before junior right-hander Caleb Ayers was able to induce a flyout to end the ballgame.

GAME NOTES: Adding to the big day for Marlow, he drilled a one-out triple in the third inning and finished just a double shy of the cycle.

The middle of the Rangers' batting order was lethal Friday as Marlow-graduate student Roger Riley (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Owen (3-for-4, 1 run, 2 RBI) combined to finish 10-for-15 with seven RBI and six runs scored.

Freshman right-fielder Joey Cicini, junior infielder Austin Vaught and sophomore outfielder Levi Padilla each added two-hit games for the Rangers, as well, as the team combined for 12 runs on 18 hits; tying a season high previously set Feb. 10 in an 18-17 win over Minor State.

Junior right-hander Luke Douthitt picked up his first win of the 2022 season as he tossed two scoreless innings of relief in the sixth and seventh innings. Douthitt limited NMHU to one hit and struck out two.

UP NEXT: Regis and New Mexico Highlands continue the four-game set with a Saturday doubleheader, scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m. out at Brandt Baseball Field in Las Vegas, N.M.
