Rangers' win streak comes to an end Saturday in doubleheader losses against New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Regis University baseball team had its seven-game win streak come to an end on Saturday, falling by final scores of 19-9 and 00-00 during Saturday's doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands University on a brutally windy afternoon in Las Vegas, N.M.

Regis (15-13-1 overall, 9-6 RMAC) will still have the opportunity to earn a series split against the Cowboys (7-20 overall, 5-10 RMAC) when the two teams play a single, nine-inning game at 12 p.m. Sunday. The Rangers defeated NMHU, 12-11, in Friday's Game One.

"New Mexico Highlands is a good offensive club and they deserve a lot of credit for how they hit the ball today. They found a way to score more runs than us and we need to find a way to pitch and play defensive a little bit better (Sunday)," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "This is a very offensive park and they (Cowboys) are comfortable at home. Biggest thing for our guys now is the ability to move on, get regrouped and be ready to go Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Persistent winds blowing out to left center and swirling dust created tough pitching and defensive conditions for both teams on Saturday. The Cowboys were able to take advantage of the home field, combining for 36 runs on 37 hits while tallying six home runs between the two games.

In Game One, the Rangers were able to put themselves out front early as they scored a least one run in each of the first five innings to own an 8-7 advantage entering the bottom of the fifth.

Unfortunately for Regis, the Cowboys' offense ignited for 12 runs in the home-half of the fifth to blow the game open en route to a 19-9 final.
Freshman shortstop Zach Daudet (2-for-5), freshman outfielder Joey Cicini (2-for-3), junior utility player Austin Vaught (2-for-3) and senior outfielder Miguel Marquez (2-for-4) all recorded multi-hit games to lead the Regis offense.

As a team, Regis swiped four stolen bases in Saturday's Game One; one shy of their season-high five steals in a 13-3 win over Fort Hays State back on Feb. 20.

In Game Two, the Cowboys' offense continued to be relentless as the scored 13 runs through the game's first three innings to take an early 13-3 lead and keep the Rangers at bay.

Backup catcher Reagan Guthrie continued his strong March, finished 2-for-2 with a RBI and sacrifice bunt to extend his current six-game hit streak.

Junior first baseman Matt Marlow, the hitting star in Friday's win with four hits and two home runs, added two more hits in Game Three.

Graduate student outfielder Kyle Koontz also added two hits in Saturday's nightcap while fellow graduate student Brevin Owen (1-for-3) led all Rangers with two RBI.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to rebound from Saturday's doubleheader when the two teams conclude the series with Game Four, scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday at Brandt Baseball Field in Las Vegas, N.M.

"Offensively, we need to hit a little better. The game is going to involved some runs just with how the park plays, so we need to string some at-bats together and put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard," LaComb said. "Pitching and defense wise, we need to play pretty clean. We can't give up free bases with walks and errors. We're going to keep it simple on focus on playing catch better tomorrow and string good at-bats together as an offense."
