Rangers respond with 7-5 win in Game Four, earn a road series split against NMHU

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Regis University baseball team shook off a tough Saturday with a complete performance in Sunday's 7-5 victory against New Mexico Highlands University to earn a hard-fought road series split.

Regis (16-13-1 overall, 10-6 RMAC) churned out 13 hits from seven different players, played error-free defense, and received quality work on the pitching rubber Sunday; all of which were point of emphasis for the Rangers after dropping games of 19-9 and 17-5 on Saturday to the Cowboys (7-21 overall, 5-11 RMAC).

"That was exactly what we needed to do and it all started with Porter Hardcastle on the mound. He gave us the start that we needed, threw up a couple zeroes early on and let us settle in," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "On the defensive side, we didn't commit an error and minimized our mistakes. Those were the two biggest things we wanted our guys to be better at (Sunday)."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers got the scoring started Sunday with a bang as graduate student Thomas Alexander launched a first-pitch fastball over the fence in deep center to lead off the second inning.

It was the second home run of the season for Alexander, who drew the start as the designated hitter and batted cleanup Sunday following an impressive week of practice.

"I thought Thomas was a really good matchup against (the Cowboys') starting arm. We've been working in practice and I just felt he was ready to go this weekend based on practice this week," LaComb said. "He hit 3-4 balls hard (Saturday), so we knew he was seeing the ball well and was on time. It was great to see him get rewarded today."

Regis would add another run in the second inning, courtesy of a RBI groundout by freshman Wes Miller. The Rangers would also add two runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to build a 6-1 advantage entering the late innings.

Junior infielder Austin Vaught drove in two runs with a RBI single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth, while graduate student catcher Roger Riley added to his 3-for-5 day at the top of the batting order with a RBI single in the fourth.

The run support was plenty for junior right-hander Porter Hardcastle as he kept the NMHU lineup off-balance through seven strong innings of work.

Hardcastle, who has now allowed three runs or less and earned a win in each of his last three starts, allowed just two runs on six hits and struck out six on Sunday as he continues to embrace his Game Four starter role.

"On Sundays in that fourth game of the weekend, a lot of guys are tired. What we talk about is bringing that energy on the last day of the weekend and Porter does that," LaComb said. "He sets the tone for our pitching staff and our guys feed off it. That's why we've wanted him in that Game Four starter role. He has a great arm and guys feed off his positive energy and that's what we need on Sundays."

New Mexico Highlands tightened the gap with a two-run eighth running, cutting the Rangers lead to 7-4, but sophomore right-hander Logan Deskin was able to close the door in the ninth for his second save of the season.

GAME NOTES: Freshman shortstop Zach Daudet joined Riley with a three-hit performance on Sunday, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Vaught (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and senior outfielder Miguel Marquez (2-for-4, 2 runs) rounded out the four Rangers' players with multi-hit games.

As a team, the Regis lineup only struck out once on Sunday while posting 13 hits from seven different players. Meanwhile, the Regis pitching staff tallied nine combined strikeouts.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will now prepare for their first and only pod of the 2022 season when they travel to Alamosa next weekend for two games against Adams State University and two games against No. 14 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

Regis is scheduled to play two games on Friday at 11 a.m. (Adams State) and 3 p.m. (Colorado Mesa). They conclude the weekend with a 3 p.m. nine-inning game against CMU on Saturday and a 3 p.m. nine-inning game Sunday against ASU.

The Rangers won all four games of their home series against the Grizzlies in Denver back on March 18-20.
