Regis opens pod play with losses to Adams State and No. 10 Colorado Mesa

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team opened its first and only pod series of the season on Friday, falling by a 5-2 final to pod hosts Adams State University in Game One before dropping an 8-1 battle against No. 10 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

A typically high-powered Regis offense (16-15-1 overall, 10-6 RMAC), which entered the day third in the RMAC in runs scored, was held in check to three runs on 13 hits between the two contests.

Adams State improved to 5-18 overall and 2-10 in the RMAC, while Colorado Mesa retook sole possession of the RMAC standings lead at 19-6 overall, 9-3 RMAC.

GAME ONE: Friday's action opened with a pitcher's duel between the Rangers' Brady Gilmore and ASU's Alfredo Villa.

Gilmore went a strong 5.1 innings for Regis, limiting Adams State to three runs — just one over the final 4.1 — while striking out five.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they were unable to get after Villa much as the right-hander went all nine innings for the Grizzlies, limiting Regis to two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out five.

Regis pushes a run across in the fourth on an RBI single from junior first baseman Matt Marlow, and added a run in the sixth when freshman shortstop Zach Daudet crossed home on a caught stealing play down at second.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead heading to the eighth, Adams State added two insurance runs to close out the 5-2 final.

GAME TWO: In Friday's finale against the nationally ranked Mavericks, the Rangers were able to play toe-to-toe for most of the afternoon before CMU pulled away with a three-run eighth inning.

Regis took the initial lead in the top of the third when junior Austin Vaught alertly scampered home during the throw down of a successful steal of second by graduate student, Roger Riley.

Colorado Mesa answered with two runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to open up a 5-1 lead. Starting pitcher Kannon Handy went six for the Mavericks, allowing one run on five hits white striking out five.

On the bump for the Rangers, senior right-hander Justin Kleinsorge went 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Redshirt junior Colten Chase paced the Regis offense with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate in Game Two.

GAME NOTES: The Rangers stole four bases as a team in Game Two. They currently lead the RMAC with 46 stolen bases on the season on 57 attempts.

Freshman right-hander Cam Bushnell pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings out of the bullpen against the Mavericks, lowering his earned run average to a sparkling 1.59 on the second in 5.2 innings pitched.

UP NEXT: Regis will continue pod action Saturday with a single game against the Mavericks. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the ASU Baseball Field in Alamosa.
