Rangers launch three home runs in late rally, but fall by 15-12 final to No. 10 Colorado Mesa

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team turned a new corner on Saturday during its pod play action against No. 10 ranked Colorado Mesa University. Facing a top-10 nationally ranked foe, the Rangers took positive steps in their narrow 15-12 loss to the Mavericks down in Alamosa.

Regis (16-16-1 overall, 10-6 RMAC) churned out 12 runs on 10 hits Saturday against the Mavericks (20-6 overall, 9-3 RMAC), while pitching and playing defense solidly for eight innings. But a seven-run second inning for the Mavericks — fueled by four errors and two wild pitches — proved to be the difference.

"I thought our guys did well (Saturday). We played great baseball for about eight of the nine innings, but we had that one inning that really hurt us," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "We didn't play catch real well that inning and our guys know that. We're going to build off the positives from today."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Mesa struck first with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning and ballooned its early cushion with the seven-run second inning, only two runs of which were earned.

The Rangers' offense was able to get going in the sixth inning, scoring three runs via a sacrifice fly from graduate student Kyle Koontz and a two-run home run off the bat of junior first baseman, Matt Marlow.

It was the team-leading ninth home run of the season for Marlow, who had a monster afternoon finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three driven in.

Regis added four more runs in the seventh on a three-run home run by sophomore outfielder Levi Padilla — his third of the spring — and a RBI single by redshirt junior Colten Chase that trimmed the Colorado Mesa lead to 12-7.

Trailing 15-7 in the ninth, the Rangers offense again erupted for five runs to threaten late; three runs coming on a deep home run to center by graduate student Thomas Alexander. But were unable to complete the comeback, falling by a 15-12 final.

GAME NOTES: Padilla (2-for-2, 3 RBI) and graduate student catcher Roger Riley (2-for-4, 1 RBI) joined Marlow with multi-hit games to lead the Rangers' offense.

With three runs batted in on Saturday, Marlow increased his team lead to 35 runs driven in on the season; tied for fifth most in the RMAC.

Saturday marked the 11th time this season that the Rangers have had multi-home run games. The three home runs were one of the team's season high of four home runs in one game, accomplished three times this spring. The last time came on March 20 against Adams State University (19-11 win).

UP NEXT: Regis will conclude pod action on Sunday with a single game against the hosts Adams State University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the ASU Baseball Field.

"We want to build off the positives we saw today. We know we have the capability of playing good baseball. We'll need to come out ready to play, have a good approach offensively and hit the ball hard," LaComb said. "I think Porter Hardcastle will give us another good start on the mound and we'll play good defense behind him. At this point, we're more focused on us and how we play rather than who we're playing. We're starting to turn a corner as a group and we just need to put it all together."
