Regis closes out pod play with 10-4 victory over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team rebounded from a tough start to the pod weekend with a resounding 10-4 victory over hosts Adam State University on Sunday at the ASU Baseball Field in Alamosa.

Regis (17-16-1 overall, 10-6 RMAC) ignited for 10 runs on 16 hits and another dominating start by junior Porter Hardcastle to the victory over the Grizzlies (5-21 overall, 2-10 RMAC); their fifth win over ASU in six matchups this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Junior first baseman Matt Marlow helped the Rangers get off to a great start with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was Marlow's second home run of the weekend and 10th of the season, which is tied for the fourth most in the RMAC so far this spring.

Redshirt junior Colten Chase added an RBI double in the frame to put the Rangers on top 3-0 their first trip to the plate.

Sophomore catcher Reagan Guthrie launched a solo home run in the second inning — his third of the season all coming against ASU — to make it a 4-0 Regis advantage.

That would be plenty of run support for Hardcastle as the right-hander dazzled again on Sunday, allowing just three runs on one hit in eight-plus innings. He'd scatter six walks and strike out seven en route to picking up his fourth straight victory dating back to March 14.

After Adams State scrapped across a run in the sixth to make it a 4-1 ballgame, the Rangers' offense erupted again in the late innings with two runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to blow the game open at 10-1 heading to the ninth.

GAME NOTES: Sophomore outfielder Levi Padilla reached base safely six times on Sunday, finishing 4-for-4 with two walks and two runs scored batting out of the No. 3 spot in the order.

Marlow finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI coming on his first inning home run. He ends the weekend a combined 8-for-18 with five runs scored, six RBI and four extra-base hits.

Graduate student Roger Riley (2-for-3, 2 runs), Chase (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and Guthrie (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) rounded out the five Rangers to record multi-hit performances Sunday.

As a team, the Rangers stole five bases against the Grizzlies in the pod finale to increase their RMAC lead to 52 stolen bases this season on 64 attempts. CSU Pueblo ranks second in the conference in steals (42-for-59).

All four pod games played over the weekend do not count as RMAC conference games.

UP NEXT: Regis returns home next weekend when it resumes RMAC action with a four-game series against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Game One is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at the Regis Baseball Field.
