No. 12 Rangers knock off No. 4 Lindenwood to officially celebrate new turf field

DENVER, Colo. — On the day Regis University Athletics officially celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated turf fields, the No. 12 Rangers women's lacrosse team christened their new home in style with a thrilling 13-10 victory against No. 4 ranked Lindenwood University.

Over 500 of the Rangers' faithful packed their lawn chairs and spilled across the artificial grass service to watch as Regis (7-0 overall, 2-0 RMAC) played host to the rival Lions (5-2 overall) for the first time since May 6, 2018.

Regis improved to 4-2 all-time against the Lions while avenging a 14-9 loss to the perennial powers last May 14 out in St. Charles.

"Our crowd was fantastic. The energy was just electric playing with that big crowd, under the lights, and on the day we officially blessed our new home field with the ribbon ceremony," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "We played a tremendous game against a top competitor and one of our biggest rivals. I'm so incredibly proud of our team for the calmness and composure we played with."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Following a low-scoring first quarter that saw Lindenwood grab a 2-1 advantage, the Rangers dominated the next 15 minutes of play, outscoring the Lions 6-1 in the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead at the break.

Junior midfielder Bailey Truex tallied the first of her three goals, via an assist from Gabby Rothermund, to get a 6-0 run for the Rangers started.

Sophomore midfielder Lily Ferguson scored an unassisted goal at the 8:55 mark, followed by another goal by Truex (8:02) and back-to-back scores from graduate student attacker Kyleigh Peoples, before graduate student Hannah Krats capped the 6-0 blitz with a goal coming with 5:39 remaining in the half.

"In the first quarter, I think we got our jitters out. We were throwing the ball away and not playing our game, but then we settled down in that second quarter," Kellner said. "We played together, we shared the ball well and we did a great job getting the ball back when we were on the defensive end."

Lindenwood responded in the third quarter, outscoring the Rangers 4-1, and pulled back to even for the first time at 10-10 with 5:30 remaining in the fourth quarter on a free position goal by Bridger Considine, who led all players with four goals.

The Rangers handled the pressure and answered back with three unanswered goals over the final 3:53, receiving what proved to be the game-winning goal by Truex set up by a dime from Krats.

Senior attacker Alexis Parker put a bow on the 13-10 final as she scored the next two Regis goals at the 1:48 and 1:25 marks, respectively.

Between the pipes, freshman goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch finished with a career-high nine saves and a 60% save percentage en route to picking up her fifth win of 2022.

"Brigit was fantastic. I know there were a lot of nerves in the whole locker room, but she was very steady for us from the very first whistle," Kellner said. "She made some huge saves for us in that first quarter to get a few under her belt and then went back in at the end of the game and played big for us again."

GAME NOTES: Regis finished the evening with a narrow 29-27 shots advantage, including 23-20 in shots on goal.

The Rangers won the turnover battle, 16-11, as well as draw controls (15-12).

Lindenwood finished 15-for-15 in clear attempts, edging the Rangers at 13-for-18.

The two national powers each finished with 10 saves and four free position shots apiece.

UP NEXT: Regis will now turn its attention back toward the rest of its RMAC schedule, starting with a 5 p.m. home game next Friday against another rival in Colorado Mesa University.

"We're excited for the chance to stay home in Colorado for a little bit now and our focus is on that first goal, which is winning the RMAC regular season championship," Kellner said.
