Rangers unable to get bats going in Pueblo, fall by 6-0 and 4-2 finals

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team wrapped up its RMAC opening series against Colorado State University Pueblo on Saturday, falling to the ThunderWolves by finals of 6-0 and 4-2 on a frigid and overcast afternoon in Pueblo.

Regis (7-10-1 overall, 1-3 RMAC), which earned a split against The Pack (10-8 overall, 3-1 RMAC) on Friday, was scored as the home team for the final two games of the series as inclement weather in the Denver area forced the site be shifted to Pueblo on Saturday.

"The players competed and we had opportunities, but couldn't execute at the right time," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "That is the game of baseball. We need to get better at playing catch and executing when we have the opportunities to do so."

HOW IT HAPPENED: A five-run second inning for the ThunderWolves put the Rangers behind the 8-ball early in Game One. CSU Pueblo took advantage of an error, four walks, two hit batsmen and a pair of wild pitches in the inning to push across five runs despite just tallying one hit.

Regis relief pitchers, freshman Brady Gilmore and sophomore Ethan Sloan, were able to right the ship as the duo combined for 7.1 strong innings out of the bullpen. Gilmore twirled a season-long four innings, limiting CSU Pueblo to one unearned run on two hits and striking out six, while the lefty Sloan tossed 3.1 innings of no-hit baseball and struck out four.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, CSU Pueblo starter Zach Pratt (7.0 IP) and reliever Frank Wierman (2.0 IP) were just as strong on the bump as they held a powerful Regis offense to a pair of hits and four walks in nine innings of work.

In Game Two, it was the Rangers who would strike first when redshirt junior Colten Chase doubled down the right-field line to bring in senior Miguel Marquez. Chase would go on to steal third and score on the RBI single by graduate student Roger Riley to put RU on top, 2-0, after one.

CSU Pueblo answered with a three-run second inning of its own, taking advantage of back-to-back singles, a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 lead.

Rangers' sophomore starting pitcher Dylan De Leon settled in over his final four innings of work, finishing the afternoon with a line of six innings pitched, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three while throwing 50 of his 76 pitches for strikes.

CSU Pueblo continued to cling to a one-run lead until the top of the seventh, adding an insurance run via a RBI walk by Reggie Williams, en route to the 4-2 final.

GAME NOTES: Coming off a seven-RBI performance in Game Two of the series Friday, Regis freshman shortstop Zach Daudet led the Rangers' offense in Game Four on Saturday by going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

Graduate student Roger Riley finished 2-for-7 during Saturday's double-header and was a combined 10-for-17 (.588) with four runs scored and five RBI in the series.

UP NEXT: Regis will be back on the road next weekend when the team opens a four-game set against Colorado Christian University. Game One action is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. Friday in Lakewood.
