Rangers drop series opener to No. 11 ranked Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A tough start was too much to overcome Thursday afternoon for the Regis University baseball team as it fell by an 11-5 final to No. 11 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

Thursday's tilt was the first of four games slated for this week between the top two teams in the RMAC standings. Regis (21-17-1 overall, 14-7 RMAC) entered the day atop the standings, one spot ahead of the nationally ranked Mavericks (25-8 overall, 12-5 RMAC) based on conference winning percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers found themselves in an early hole, falling behind 8-0 through the game's first inning. Only two of the eight runs were earned as an error, three walks and a hit batsman aided to the early struggles.

"We played well for eight innings (Thursday). It was just that first inning that really got away from us," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "We've got to come out ready to go a bit better tomorrow. But we'll build off the positives we did in those other eight innings as we head into tomorrow's games."

The Rangers rebounded nicely from the tough start as they held Colorado Mesa off the scoreboard the next three innings and limited a deep Mavericks' lineup to just three runs the rest of the way.

Offensively, Regis got on the scoreboard with a three-run third inning sparked by some small ball.

Junior third baseman Colten Chase drove in the first run on a RBI groundout. Graduate student Roger Riley followed with a sacrifice fly and sophomore outfielder Levi Padilla capped the inning with a RBI single to left for one of his two hits in the ballgame.

The Rangers would add a run in the fourth inning on another productive, RBI groundout by Chase and concluded their scoring with an unearned run via a Mavericks' throwing error in the seventh.

Chase finished 2-for-5 with the two RBI, while Padilla and freshman outfielder Joey Cicini each finished 2-for-5 as well to lead the Regis lineup.

On the bump, the trio of juniors Zach Harstad and Caleb Ayers, as well as freshman Colton Wuelfing, combined for 3.2 innings of great relief pitching out of the bullpen, limiting CMU to just one unearned run.

Harstad tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball before giving way to Ayers, who also pitched 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit while notching a strikeout.

UP NEXT: The Rangers, who had previously won five straight games entering play Thursday, will look to bounce back on Friday when they square off in a doubleheader against the Mavericks. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bergman Field in Grand Junction.

"Something we're working on with our program is focusing on playing against the game more than the opponent. I thought we played good baseball in the middle innings and that's the biggest thing for us," LaComb said. "We want to play the game right and control how we play more than focus on who we're playing against. We liked how we played most of (Thursday's game) and we just need to build off of that."
