Rangers earn Friday doubleheader split against No. 11 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team earned a hard fought doubleheader split on Friday, bouncing back from a 13-5 loss in Game One to win an 18-11 slugfest in the nightcap against No. 11 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

The win for the Rangers (22-18-1 overall, 15-8 RMAC) marked their first victory against the Mavericks (26-9 overall, 13-6 RMAC) since they knocked off the perennial powers, 15-12, back on May 9, 2018. It also gives the Rangers an opportunity to split the four-game series when the two teams square off in the nine-inning finale at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

"It was exciting to see how our offense showed up that second game. We still have room for improvement, but I was very happy to see how our guys responded and bounced back after the loss in Game One," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "We want to take that momentum into (Saturday) and split the series."

GAME ONE: Regis took the first lead of the day in the second inning, courtesy of a RBI single off the bat of junior infielder Austin Vaught.
The Rangers held that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when the Mavericks struck for five runs. Colorado Mesa followed that up with a six-run fourth inning to take an 11-1 lead and the momentum, riding it to a 13-5 final.

Graduate student Roger Riley tallied the second run batted in of the ballgame for Regis with a solo home run to left in the seventh inning; his sixth home run of the spring.

GAME TWO: In the nightcap, the Rangers' offense got after CMU starter Cooper Vasquez early and often, striking for four runs in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by junior third baseman Colten Chase and a three-run shot by sophomore Levi Padilla.

They were the first two of five home runs the Rangers would hit in Game Two while combining for 18 total runs on 17 hits as an offense.

"Our guys did a really good job of getting on time in the second game. Up and down the lineup, our guys were on time and ran into a few pitches. We got good swings off on good pitches," LaComb said. "Our guys saw the ball really well in that second game and capitalized on it."

Chase led the way for Regis, finishing 3-for-4 with four runs scored, four RBI and two home runs on the afternoon, while Padilla also added a 3-for-4, 4 RBI performance out of the six-hole.

The Regis lineup would be relentless as it scored at least one run in six different innings and received hits from nine different players as the team methodically built its lead.

"Adding on really helped us breathe a little bit, defensively. We had some innings where we gave runs back to Mesa, but our guys kept pushing and were able to answer back the next half inning," LaComb said. "I'm glad we didn't put up a couple zeroes in a row because that could have really swung the momentum back over to the other team. We continued to tack on runs, which allowed us to play a little more freely."

Redshirt sophomore Trey Harrison finished a spotless 3-for-3 with two runs scored serving as the designated hitter, while junior first baseman Matt Marlow was the fourth Ranger to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Freshman shortstop Zach Daudet was 1-for-3 with three runs scored, two walks and a two-run home run to left field that gave the Rangers a 6-0 lead at the time in the second inning.

The fifth home run of the day for Regis came courtesy of Vaught; the first career home run for the junior out of Lubbock, Texas.

Vaught's homer, a two-run shot to left-center in the fifth inning, came at a crucial time after Colorado Mesa had briefly trimmed the deficit to just three at 9-6 the previous half inning.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will go hunting for a series split when the two teams play a single, nine-inning game on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Bergman Field in Grand Junction.

"We have some things that we need to clean up on our end, but we want our guys to build on the positives and continue to get better every game. That's all we can control," LaComb said. "Our guys have ability and have talent. We just need to believe in ourselves that we can execute at a high level when we play against good teams."
