Regis falls by 10-5 final in series finale against No. 11 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team concluded its four-game series against No. 11 ranked Colorado Mesa University on Saturday, falling by a 10-5 final in Game Four.

With the result, Colorado Mesa (27-9 overall, 14-6 RMAC) earns a 3-1 series win and retakes the RMAC standings lead one full game ahead of MSU Denver and two games ahead of Regis (22-20-1 overall, 15-9 RMAC) with three weeks remaining in the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers were able to take a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when graduate student Roger Riley delivered a two-out single through the left side of the infield, scoring sophomore Braxton Boyle who came in as a pinch runner for Zach Daudet.

Colorado Mesa answered back with a five-run first inning of its own to take a 5-1 lead.

Down 6-1 in the third inning, redshirt sophomore Trey Harrison continued his splendid series with a solo home run to left center. It was the first career home run for Harrison in a Rangers' uniform and his fourth hit of the series after going 3-for-3 in Friday's 18-11 win over the Mavericks.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the momentum from the Harrison homer was short lived as CMU again responded with a three-run third inning, and added a run in the sixth, to take a 10-2 advantage into the late innings.

The Rangers attempted a late rally, plating three runs in the eighth inning to trim the deficit to 10-5 on a two-run home run by Riley and a RBI groundout from junior infielder Austin Vaught, but were unable to come all the way back as CMU held on for the 10-5 final.

GAME NOTES: Four different Regis players recorded multi-hit games on Saturday in Boyle (2-for-4), sophomore Levi Padilla (2-for-3), sophomore catcher Reagan Guthrie (2-for-4) and Riley (2-for-4, 3 RBI).

The home run by Riley in the eighth inning was his second home run of the series and seventh of the season; second on the team behind junior first baseman Matt Marlow with 11.

On the mound, junior right-hander Luke Douthitt, sophomore righty Logan Deskin and senior right-hander Michael May combined for 3.1 solid innings of relief on Saturday.

Douthitt went 1.1 innings, limiting Colorado Mesa to one run on one hit while striking out two. Deskin and May each followed with clean innings of their own as Deskin struck out two of the four batters he faced in the seventh and May notched a strikeout in his 1-2-3 eighth inning.

UP NEXT: The Rangers head back on the road next weekend to play a four-game set against Colorado School of Mines (23-14 overall, 8-12 RMAC). First pitch for Game One is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Jim Darden Field in Golden.
