Rangers tally eight extra-base hits, claim a 13-8 Game One win over Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team opened a four-game road series against Colorado School of Mines Friday evening in Golden, winning a 13-8 slugfest that saw the Rangers notch eight extra-base hits.

Regis (23-19-1 overall, 16-9 RMAC) finished with 15 total hits in the victory, climbing within a half-game of Metropolitan State University of Denver for second place in the RMAC standings with just seven games remaining in the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers' potent lineup came out swinging as they put up four runs in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a walk, hit batsman and error in the inning by the Orediggers (24-14 overall, 9-12 RMAC).

Junior first baseman Matt Marlow got the scoring started with a RBI hit-by-pitch, scoring sophomore Levi Padilla after he led off the ballgame with a single. Regis would add three more runs on the sacrifice fly graduate student Roger Riley, an Orediggers' error, and heads up base running by Marlow as he trotted home on a caught stealing play down at second.

Regis added another run in the top of the second on a RBI triple off the bat of redshirt junior Colten Chase; his second hit in as many innings and just one of five hits the Rangers' third baseman produced in the ballgame.

Chase finished 5-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI — his career high for hits in a game came on Feb. 10 when he went 6-for-6 against Minot State — to pace four different Rangers who had multi-hit games Friday.

The Rangers continued to methodically built their lead before breaking the game open with a four-run seventh inning that ballooned the Regis lead to 13-7. Padilla and graduate student Brevin Owen each drilled RBI doubles and Chase concluded his career evening with a RBI single in the inning.

Owen finished with a slash line of 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a pair of doubles, and three runs driven in out of the No. 3 hole in the batting order.

On the bump, senior right-hander Justin Kleinsorge tied his season high with 10 strikeouts in his five innings of work en route to picking up his fourth win of the season. The Regis ace limited the Orediggers to four runs on seven hits.

The right-handed trio of junior Caleb Ayers (1.1 IP, 2H, 0 ER), sophomore Logan Deskin (1.0 IP, 1H, 2K) and senior Michael May (1.0 IP, 1ER, 3H) combined to toss 3.1 strong innings of relief to put a bow on the 13-8 final.

UP NEXT: Regis and Colorado School of Mines will resume the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. After originally being scheduled to start at noon, the two teams and umpires reached mutual consent to push the start time of Saturday's first game to 2 p.m., according to a press release by the CSM Athletic Department.
