Rangers' pitching impress in Saturday doubleheader split against Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team came up just shy of collecting a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, instead settling for a split with a 4-1 victory in Game One and a tight 5-4 loss in the nightcap to Colorado School of Mines.

Regis (24-20-1 overall, 17-10 RMAC) still owns a 2-1 series lead over the Orediggers (26-15 overall, 10-13 RMAC) heading into Sunday's finale.

"We had an opportunity to take two games today, but sometimes that's just baseball," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "Biggest thing for our guys is we need to move on from what happened in that second game and show up (Sunday) ready to win the series."

GAME ONE: Pitching led the way for the Rangers in Saturday's opener as freshman right-hander Brady Gilmore was spectacular over six innings.

Gilmore stonewalled the Orediggers for one run on just two hits, walked one and struck out two while only needing 87 pitches to maneuver through six innings. He earned his team-leading fourth win of the season, improving to 4-3 on the spring.

Sophomore right-hander Logan Deskin followed suit with a clean 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his team-leading third save.

"That was a big-time performance from Brady. He really stepped up with us facing another really good arm from Mines. For him to deliver that kind of performance; that allowed our offense to just find a way to scratch across some runs and win that ballgame," LaComb said. "We have a lot of young guys like Brady and Logan who are stepping into important roles and helping us win games. And we're going to continue to depend on them."

With the Orediggers' offense in check, the Regis lineup was able to manufacture a pair of two-run innings. RU took the lead in the second on a RBI groundout by sophomore catcher Reagan Guthrie and a passed by CSM that allowed Trey Harrison to trot home.

The Rangers added two insurance runs in the sixth, courtesy of a RBI double by graduate student catcher Roger Riley. After McKay Banks pinch ran for riley, he crossed home one batter later on the RBI single from Harrison that made it a 4-0 Regis lead.

Riley (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Harrison (2-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 BB) combined for four of the Rangers' seven hits in a quick and well-pitched Game One.

GAME TWO: The Rangers battled back from a 4-2 deficit through four innings to give themselves a chance to win Game Two, but were unable to take full advantage of a bases loaded, no outs situation in the top of the seventh.

Graduate student outfielder Kyle Koontz launched his fourth home run of the spring in the fifth inning to pull the Rangers within one at 4-3. And in the top of the seventh, after a RBI walk drawn by sophomore Levi Padilla plated the tying run and put a Ranger on every base with no outs in the seventh.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, Mines reliever Zachary Kriethe was able to escape the jam with a strikeout, foul out and fly out to preserve the 4-4 tie.

The Orediggers capitalized on the momentum change the next half inning when a two-out RBI double by Taylor White scored the unearned, game-winning run.

"We had our opportunities, but just didn't execute well that inning. That happens and we just need to learn from it so, when we're in that situation again, we execute better and that's the bottom line," LaComb said.

As a team, Regis finished with six hits in Saturday's Game Two, highlighted by the Koontz homer and a double by Padilla.

The Rangers' bullpen also continued their strong series as Cam Bushnell, Luke Luebker, Colton Wuelfing and Luke Douthitt combined to throw 3.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run on four combined hits.

UP NEXT: Regis will look to earn the series victory when the two teams square off for a Sunday matinee. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Jim Darden Field in Golden.
