Rangers unable to dig out of early hole, fall by 8-5 final to Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. — An early hole proved to be too much to overcome for the Regis University baseball team on Sunday, falling by an 8-5 final in Game Four of its road series against Colorado School of Mines.

The Rangers (24-21-1 overall, 17-11 RMAC) and the Orediggers (26-15 overall, 11-13 RMAC) ended up splitting the series two games apiece. Regis heads into the final series of the regular season next weekend — a four-game home set against MSU Denver — currently sitting fourth in the RMAC standings with the potential to climb as high as second.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado School of Mines took control of Game Four early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning as they took advantage of three timely hits and three walks to build the early cushion.

The Rangers attempted to chip away as they scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to briefly trim the gap to 5-3, following the 12th home run of the season from junior first baseman Matt Marlow in the top of the fifth.

CSM answered with two runs of their own in the home-half of the fifth to bump its lead back to 7-3.

Regis kept fighting, receiving a solo home run by freshman Wes Miller in the sixth, and scoring on a groundout in the top of the seventh, but were unable to break through with a big inning.

The home run for Miller for his second of the season and part of a career day for the utility infielder as he finished with a career-high three hits (3-for-4) batting out of the No. 8 hole.

Marlow added a 3-for-4 day at the plate, as well, while graduate student Roger Riley was the third Ranger to produce a multi-hit game on Sunday as he finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.

On the mound, the Rangers received a handful of quality bullpen performances from redshirt junior Luke Luebker, freshman Cam Bushnell and sophomores Dylan De Leon and Logan Deskin.

De Leon tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Luebker went 0.2 scoreless, Bushnell tossed a scoreless sixth inning, and Deskin finished the ballgame with a strong 1.1 innings pitched, striking out two.

Sunday marked the third appearance of the series for Deskin, who allowed just two hits and struck out five Orediggers in 3.1 combined innings, lowering his opponent batting average to a sparkling .217 in 18 total appearances this spring.

UP NEXT: Regis will look to close out the 2022 regular season strong, and solidify its RMAC postseason positioning, next weekend when it hosts MSU Denver for a four-game series. Game One is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. Friday at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
