No. 3 Rangers secure fourth RMAC regular season title with 15-8 road win over Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The No. 3 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team crossed off the first of its long term goals for the 2022 season, grinding out a 15-8 road win over Colorado Mesa University on Saturday to secure the program's third straight RMAC regular season championship.

Saturday's win marked the fourth regular season conference title for Regis (17-0 overall, 12-0 RMAC) in program history (2012, 2019, 2021 and 2022), guaranteeing the Rangers hosting rights for next weekend's RMAC Tournament where RU will be hunting its fifth RMAC Tournament title.

The semi-final rounds will be hosted on Friday at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver, with the championship game set for noon on Sunday. Semi-final start times have not yet been announced as of Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Mesa (12-5 overall, 10-2 RMAC) was amped up in the first quarter, owning a 1-0 and 2-1 leads early on.

With the score deadlocked at 4-4, Regis junior attacker Gabby Rothermund gave the Rangers a jolt as she scored with just 21 seconds remaining in the quarter to give Regis a 5-4 leading heading to the second.

The Rangers capitalized on the momentum swing as they outscore the Mavericks 5-1 in the second quarter to open up a 10-5 lead and create a little breathing room at the half.

A defense dominated third quarter (1-1) gave Regis an 11-6 lead heading into the fourth. Colorado Mesa briefly pulled with four at 12-8 on a goal by Taylor Jakeman at the 7:05 mark, but Regis answered right back with three unanswered scores to secure the 15-8 final and RMAC crown.

Graduate student midfielder Hannah Krats led all Rangers with three goals and an assist.

Displaying their depth, six different Rangers would also tally at least two goals as graduate student Kyleigh Peoples (2 goals, 1 assist), Rothermund (2 goals, 2 assists), junior Bailey Truex (2 goals, 1 assist), sophomore Lily Ferguson (2 goals, 2 assists) and senior attacker Alexis Parker (2 goals, 2 assists) all produced multi-goal performances.

Freshman midfielder Madeline Schallmoser and senior midfielder Lucy Johnson each added a goal apiece, as well, as part of the deep and balanced Rangers' attack.

In net, true freshman Brigit Goetsch earned her ninth victory of the spring, stopping six of the 14 shots on goal she faced.

GAME NOTES: The Rangers won the shots battle 39-22, including 23-14 in shots on goal.

Additionally, Regis earned the edge in the turnover battle (24-18), ground balls (24-20) and were 19-of-24 (79%) on clear attempts. Graduate student defenseman Sarah Kate Dhom led the way for the Rangers with a team-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Colorado Mesa finished with a slight 14-10 advantage in draw controls.

Another key stat Saturday was the Rangers' efficiency in free position attempts, going 5-for-9 on free position shots compared to 2-for-6 by the Mavericks.

UP NEXT: Regis will play host to the semi-final and final rounds of the RMAC Tournament, scheduled to get underway Friday at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.

The top-seeded Rangers are slated to play No. 4 seed Fort Lewis College with the other semi-final featuring No. 2 Colorado Mesa and No. 3 seed University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Official game times for next weekend's tournament will be released by the RMAC and Regis University Athletics early next week. Be sure to follow along with Regis University Athletics on social media platforms and the athletic website (www.regisrangers.com) for the latest news and updates.
