Rangers sweep Saturday doubleheader, take commanding 3-0 series lead against UCCS

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team put together a complete 14-inning performance on Saturday, earning wins of 5-0 and 10-5 against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, to take a dominating 3-0 series lead heading into Sunday's finale.

Regis (20-16-1 overall, 13-6 RMAC) notched its fourth straight winning dating back to last Sunday and have vaulted into second place in the RMAC standings behind No. 6 ranked Colorado Mesa.

The Rangers have also guaranteed themselves a series win against the Mountain Lions (10-23 overall, 5-10 RMAC), avenging a series lost to UCCS last spring down in Colorado Springs.

"Our guys came ready to play and we were much better on the pitching and defensive side of things than we were Friday, which was what we wanted to see," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "Offensively, we kept scratching and clawing all day. We have great momentum heading into (Sunday)."

GAME ONE: True freshman Brady Gilmore set the tone in Game One for the Rangers as he twirled his best collegiate start to date.

The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, limiting the Mountain Lions to just four hits — two bunt singles — and a pair of walks while tying his career high with six strikeouts. Gilmore improved to 2-3 overall on the season and lowered his earned run average to 6.35 with the performance.

"He helped our bullpen a ton by going all seven innings, allowing us to attack and play matchups better in Game Two. We can't ask Brady to do that every performance, but he was big for us," LaComb said. "I'm really proud of him and want him to build off this with some confidence heading into next week."

With Gilmore tossing zeros on the scoreboard, the Rangers' offense was able to methodically build its lead. They struck for two runs in the third on a RBI single from junior Austin Vaught and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of redshirt junior, Colten Chase.

Chase would add a RBI single in the fifth that scored Vaught before junior first baseman Matt Marlow and sophomore catcher Reagan Guthrie provided the exclamation point on the 5-0 win with towering solo home runs to center field in the sixth inning.

For Marlow, the home run was his team-leading 11th of the season. He finished the day with three total RBI, giving him 42 on the spring; the second most among all RMAC players.
Guthrie's home run was the fourth of the season for the Regis backup catcher, lifting his batting average to an even .300 on the season in 19 games played.

GAME TWO: The Rangers' offense picked up where they left off at the start of Game Two as they scored nine of their 10 runs through the game's first three innings.

A RBI single by Chase got the scoring started in the first inning and he came home one-batter later on a two-run home run off the bat of redshirt freshman, Joey Cicini, to give RU a 3-0 lead before the first out of the inning was recorded.

Regis tacked on a fourth run via a RBI single from freshman Zach Daudet. The Rangers would then add three more runs in the second — the big blow being a two-run single by Marlow — two runs in the third and a single run in the sixth.

AS a team, Regis finished with 17 total hits in Game Two from nine different players. Leading the way was Chase as he was a spotless 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in. He finished the day a staggering 6-for-7 at the plate with five runs driven in batting out of the No. 2 spot.

Once on base, Chase was a menace as he tallied four stolen bases on the day, including three stolen bases in Game Two.

"He was very dynamic and that's the type of player he is," LaComb said of Chase. "He can do a lot of different, special things on a baseball field. He also laid a great bunt down today, which was my favorite thing he did and probably the smallest thing he did. We're very happy with the way he's playing and hope he can carry that confidence over into tomorrow."

Graduate student catcher Roger Riley finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while fellow graduate student Brevin Owen (3-for-4) and Daudet (2-for-3) each added multi-hit games for the Rangers in Saturday's nightcap.

On the mound, sophomore left-hander Ethan Sloan got the start and was able to produce three workmanlike innings before handing off to left-handed reliever, Zach Harstad.
Harstad picked up his second win of the season with three shutout innings out of the bullpen, limiting UCCS to one hit and striking out one.

UP NEXT: Regis will aim for the four-game sweep of the Mountain Lions on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
