Rangers rally from early deficit to earn series sweep of UCCS

DENVER, Colo. — An early deficit and heavy winds did little to slow down the Regis University baseball team as the Rangers notched their fifth straight win on Sunday, rolling to a 14-7 victory and sweeping a four-game set against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Following the sweep of UCCS (10-24 overall, 5-11 RMAC), and coupled with No. 6/7 Colorado Mesa (24-8 overall, 11-5 RMAC) splitting a series against MSU Denver, the Rangers (21-17-1 overall, 14-6 RMAC) have soared into sole possession of first place in the RMAC standings based on conference win percentage.

Regis has played one more series than the nationally ranked Mavericks and own a three-game lead in the win column.

"Getting a series sweep was awesome, but the bigger thing is I'm just extremely pleased with the way we played this weekend," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I thought our guys competed very hard and this is a good time in the year to get things rolling and get some momentum because we have three series against three good teams these next few weekends. We want to be playing our best baseball right now and our guys are taking strides in the right direction."

HOW IT HAPPENED: For the first time in the series, the Rangers had to play behind at the start of Friday as UCCS came out swinging, producing four runs in the top of the first on a three-run home run by Brad Madison and a solo shot by Caleb Stubbings.

Regis didn't blink, answering with one run in the bottom of the first on a RBI groundout from graduate student Roger Riley.

The Rangers climbed back within one with two runs in the third, aided by a RBI single from Riley, before taking the lead in the fifth with their own four-run inning.

Junior first baseman Matt Marlow tied up the game with a RBI double to score freshman shortstop Zach Daudet. Marlow trotted home one batter later on the RBI double by Riley before sophomore outfielder Levi Padilla punctuated the inning with a two-run home run to right that pushed the RU lead to 7-4.

The home run was the fourth of the spring for Padilla, who finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and was one of six different Rangers to record multi-hit games Sunday.

"I can't speak enough about the competitiveness of this group. When they came in after that top of the first inning, they weren't phased at all. I think that shows a sign of maturity and their confidence in their abilities," LaComb said. "They knew we were going to fight back. We had tough at-bats and I loved the competitiveness we showed in the batter's box."

The Rangers' offense was relentless as they added a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and blew the game open with a four-run eight inning that featured run scoring doubled by Chase and Marlow, as well as a two-run moonshot through the heavy winds by senior outfielder Brevin Owen; his second of the spring.

On the mound, junior right-hander Porter Hardcastle calmed the waters after the first inning and tossed three straight scoreless innings before giving way to sophomore Dylan De Leon.

De Leon pitched two solid innings of relief in the fifth and sixth innings to pick up the victory, evening his record at 3-3 this season.

GAME NOTES: The Rangers played one of their best defensive series of the season over the weekend as they committed just four total errors — and just one error over the final two games of the series — compared to 16 errors committed in the four games by the Mountain Lions.

"It's something we've preached all year with our guys. We want to pitch and play defense well. I'm very confident in our lineup that we'll find ways to score runs. But the biggest thing that'll help us win is if we can pitch and play catch well," LaComb said. "To only have two errors on the weekend; that's good baseball and a big step for us."

Redshirt junior Colten Chase was a menace the entire series for the Rangers, finishing 10-for-16 at the plate with six runs scored, eight RBI and six stolen bases. He is currently riding a six-game hitting streak with multiple hits in five straight games.

UP NEXT: The Rangers head west for a four-game series against nationally ranked Colorado Mesa with the chance to take over the RMAC standings lead with just three regular season series remaining.

Due to Easter Sunday, the series has been bumped up a day with Game One action slated for 6:05 p.m. Thursday, April 14 at Bergman Field in Grand Junction.

"We want to build off the momentum of this weekend and we need to play clean baseball again down there," LaComb said. "If we can compete the same way we did this weekend, and just play against the game, keep doing the little things right, then I think good things are going to happen."
