Rangers fall to UCCS on Day Two of RMAC Tournament to conclude 2022 season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team had its 2022 season come to a close Thursday, falling by an 8-4 final to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs during Day Two of the RMAC Tournament out in Grand Junction.

Regis finishes the season with a 27-24-1 overall record. And while the ending to the spring was not what the Rangers had hoped, there was plenty to be proud of as a program after posting back-to-back winning seasons and a second-place finish in the RMAC regular season standings; the team's best regular season finish since joining the conference in 1997.

"I think this group has a lot to be proud of with the regular season they had. They set new standards for our program and that's exciting," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "Our goal is to be better next year. This group set a high standard for our conference play, and we know there are still things we can clean up. But I'm very proud of this group and I think our future is bright. We had a lot of young guys step up and prove throughout the year that they can help us win."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers and Mountain Lions (21-31 overall) each pushed across runs in the second inning, with the Rangers' tally coming courtesy of graduate student Roger Riley.

Riley reached base on an error, moved to second via a walk and to third on a sacrifice bunt before scampering home on a wild pitch to even the game at 1-1.

The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the fourth, where UCCS took advantage of a Regis error and clubbed two home runs in the inning to take a 7-1 lead. UCCS added another solo home run in the fifth to make it an 8-1 advantage as the Regis offense struggled to find green grass against Mountain Lions starter, Evan Langston.

"UCCS had that one big inning against us that put us in a hole hard to climb back out of," LaComb said. "Offensively, I thought we hit a lot of balls hard today, but they were right at guys, so we weren't able to build any momentum. But that's baseball sometimes. We had two poor games in a row in the tournament and it was the wrong timing for it."

Regis was able to break through in the sixth inning, cutting the UCCS lead in half at 8-4 on a three-run home run launched to left off the bat of Riley. It was the eighth home run of the season for the Rangers' leading hitter, who ends his breakout 2022 season with a career-high .439 batting average and 44 RBI.

"Roger has been one of the best hitters in the conference all year and put good at-bats together. That was a big-time hit to cut the lead in half and exactly what we needed at the time," LaComb said.

Junior right-hander Caleb Ayers (1.2 IP, 2 Ks), sophomore right-hander Logan Deskin (1.1 IP, 2 Ks) and senior righty Michael May (1.0 IP, 1 K) combined to through four innings of scoreless relief to keep the Rangers within striking distance. But, unfortunately for Regis, the offensive momentum stalled as UCCS reliever Jon Sotto was able to toss 3.1 scoreless innings, relinquishing just a pair of walks, to seal the 8-4 final.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to build off their back-to-back winning seasons and they move forward into 2023. Regis is set to graduate nine players of the 2022 roster in Riley, Andy Beyene, Miguel Marquez, McKay Banks, Brevin Owen, Sean O'Hagan, Kyle Koontz, JJ Reeves and Thomas Alexander.

LaComb said it will be a major challenge to replace the players and people leaving the program as part of the 2022 class. But that the program is in good shape moving forward as it builds around a young core that included seven projected returners in the Regis starting lineup Thursday.

"We'll lose some important guys and it's even harder losing the people. We had great people in that senior class and I appreciate them for who they are as human beings. I think they're going to accomplish great things in their careers and in their lives," LaComb said. "In regards to next year, I think we're in a good position. I think we have some key pieces coming in and key pieces coming back. Biggest thing for us will be getting the team to gel, maintain our culture and make sure we're all on the same page. We have the pieces and just need to put it all together next year."
