Hand and Teague each net two, Rangers cruise to 6-0 win over Black Hills

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team capped another crucial six-point weekend in style Sunday, erupting for six goals in a 6-0 drubbing of Black Hills State University to put a bow on Blue & Gold Weekend.

Regis (5-4-1 overall, 4-0 RMAC) has now posted four straight victories to open conference play, while the loss dropped Black Hills to 1-5-2 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC.

"I'm really proud of the girls. It's never easy in the RMAC, regardless of who you play, to get six points in a weekend and we've been able to do that two weekends in a row," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "I was especially proud of how we came back today after an emotional and hard-fought match against MSU Denver. It would have been easy for us to let up and rest a little, but the energy and focus was there and a continuation from where we left off in the Metro game."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers scored two of their six goals in the first half, each coming off the head of senior midfielder Madison Hand; her first two goals of the 2022 season.
Hand netted her first goal in the 16th minute when she headed in a corner kick opportunity from sophomore midfielder Sarah Wynn.

Just five minutes later, on another corner kick opportunity, Hand was able to cobble up a loose rebound after an initial shot by Madison Cullinan was stopped and put it past the BHSU keeper to make it a 2-0 Regis lead.

Regis would add a third set piece goal on Sunday in the 60th minute when senior defenseman Casey Lavin scored her first goal of the fall via an assist from Jillian Skursenski.

"We started working on set pieces the very first day of training. We have some talented ball winners in (Hand) and (Cullinan), Casey is another one, so those are just important moments when you have the opportunity to put a ball away," Frykholm said. "It's not just the finish, it also takes great execution on the service so it was really nice to see the reward of the time we've spent working on set pieces."

The Rangers' attack did just as much damage in the open field on Sunday, as well, as they registered a season-high 30 shots, 17 of which landed on frame.

Freshman forward Alex Baer scored her second goal of the season in the 50th minute, booting home a cross from senior forward Kelby Kuo.

Fellow senior Audrey Teague then put a bow on the victory with goals in the 65th minute and 82nd minute, assisted by freshman Natalie Bunch, to up her season total to a team-leading four goals this fall.

"Those were two quintessential goals for her," Frykholm said of Teague. "The first she just kicked the daylights out of the ball. She's so talented that she can strike a ball like that. Her second goal was just effort, being relentless in the box and getting on the end of a ball."

GAME NOTES
  • The 30 shots by the Rangers were their most in a game since taking 41 shots on Sept 6, 2021 against Southern Nazarene.
  • Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Martin earned the victory and a shared shutout, making three saves in her 59:52 of game action.
  • Regis finished with a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Rangers defense limited Black Hills State to six shots.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to continue their winning ways next weekend when they welcome in Westminster College (7 p.m. Friday) and Colorado Mesa University (1 p.m. Sunday); two teams that were preseason picked to finished inside the top-four of the RMAC standings.

"I told the girls after the match that, 'We've done great work to this point, now we'll see if we're for real,'" Frykholm said of the upcoming home stand. "We want to contend inside the top-2, top-3 teams in the RMAC and we'll get a good idea of where we stand next weekend. We face two really talented, athletic teams and it'll be a challenge for us. We'll take them one at a time and try to continue to raise our level each time out."
