Rangers knock off (RV) Westminster to extend win streak to five straight

DENVER, Colo. — On a rain soaked and frigid evening, the Regis University women's soccer team earned its grittiest win of 2022 to date, knocking off Westminster College by a 1-0 final to earn the team's fifth straight victory to begin RMAC play.

With the win, Regis surged to 6-3-1 overall and 5-0 in the RMAC, while the loss dropped Westminster, a team receiving votes in the latest United States Soccer Coaches' Poll, to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference.

"I told the girls afterwards, 'They don't put pretty or ugly on the three points. Sometimes you just have to earn them ugly,'" said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "It wasn't our best night of soccer. But it was our best night in terms of showing courage, of fight and playing with desire. You need those qualities to make it through the RMAC and I'm proud of the way the team dug in."

HOW IT HAPPENED: After a midfield defensive struggle through much of the opening 45 minutes, and heavy halftime rains that dropped temperatures and made for a slick surface, it was the Rangers who came out of the break unphased.

Regis flipped the field immediately on the visiting Griffins, earning a free kick opportunity from 30 yards out just three minutes into the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Claire Faulkner sent in a dangerous service that bounced in the box before finding the right foot of senior midfielder Madison Hand, who calmly buried her shot in the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winner.

It was the third goal in the past two games for Hand, who won RMAC Offensive Player of the Week for her two-goal effort last Sunday in a 6-0 rout of Black Hills State.

"We talked at halftime about not being afraid of contact. Audrey (Teague) got into the attacking third, was mixing it up, and drew a foul. And we knew with the elements, it wasn't going to be a pretty goal but rather something crazy that was going to win it," Frykholm said. "Madison just followed the play and never quit on it. It was the type of goal we knew was going to happen on one end and we made sure it was for us."

The Rangers were able to play conservative over the final 42 minutes and change. And despite being outshot 17-10, they were even with the Griffins with six shots on goal while limiting a high-powered Westminster squad to minimal quality chances.

"The first 10-12 minutes, we kind of had a hard time tracking them and they were turning us over. But as the game wore on, in the second half especially, I thought we did a great job neutralizing their attack," Frykholm said. "Westminster has a lot of gifted players, but we did a great job limiting their counter-attacks and winning first balls in the midfield to make it hard for them to move forward."

Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Martin picked up her third solo shutout of the season in the victory, stopping all six chances she faced.

UP NEXT: Regis will look to make it three straight six-point weekends to begin conference play when it hosts Colorado Mesa University (4-5-1 overall, 2-2 RMAC) at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"Colorado Mesa is a different opponent, very athletic and they're going to pose some problems for us with how quick they can attack," Frykholm said. "We'll need to be tight defensive, choose our spots to move forward and spread them out to neutralize their athleticism. We're expecting a very good match with a great history and rivalry between the two programs."
