Eagles crash the glass, edge the Rangers in first game of 2023

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team opened the 2023 portion of its schedule on Monday with a make-up game again Chadron State University, falling by 74-64 final to a surging Eagles' squad.

Regis, limited on Monday due to some injuries and illness that reared up during the holiday break, slid to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the RMAC standings. Chadron State moved to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play in the early going.

"Bottom line is we weren't tough enough (Monday). Chadron State beat us by offensive rebounding," said Regis head men's basketball coach, Brady Bergeson, alluding to the Eagles' 16 offensive boards and 19 second-chance points. "We were short-handed due to injury and sickness, but we still had enough to get the job done. We just didn't do it."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers led by as many as six points in the first half, and held 35-31 lead over the Eagles, heading into the halftime locker rooms.

Junior guard Eddy Egun scored all 11 of his points in the first half to help the Rangers build their lead while graduate student forward Jas Singh added nine of his 14 points through the opening 20 minutes, as well.

Regis held its last lead of the ballgame at 48-46 with 11:48 remaining on a short jumper cashed in by senior forward Aaron Bokol before the Eagles responded with a 9-0 blitz to build a 55-48 lead midway through the second half.

The Rangers were able to stay within striking distance, inching back within four at 57-53 with 6:56 remaining and within six at 68-62 at the 2:00 mark, but were unable to string enough stops and defensive rebounds together to pull off the comeback.

Chadron State racked up 10 of its 16 offensive rebounds in the second half and shot 45.7 percent (16-for-35) over the final 20 minutes, led by guard Isaiah Wyatt with a game-high 19 points.

Graduate student guard David Simental matched Wyatt with 19 points to lead three Rangers in double-figures while adding a team-high four assists.
