Rangers fall to Lubbock Christian to conclude DII Conference Challenge weekend

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Regis University men's basketball team closed out the opening weekend of the 2023-24 season on Saturday afternoon, falling by a 73-52 final to Lubbock Christian University on Day Two of the Division II Conference Challenge.

Regis (0-2 overall) received a strong performance from its bench unit, which scored 31 of the team's 52 points, but were unable to slow down an efficient Chaparrals team (2-2 overall) that committed just seven turnovers and shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) from the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lubbock Christian was able to take command on the game in the first half, jumping out to an 18-8 lead at the under-12 media timeout of the first half.

After trailing by as many as 18 points in the opening period, the Rangers were able to whittle the lead down to 12 at 39-27 entering the break following a put-back layup from redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun with three ticks remaining before halftime.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they were unable to carry the strong close to the first half over into the second as the Chaparrals opened the final 20 minutes on a 15-4 run to build a lead of 54-31 with 14:18 remaining.

LCU was able to maintain the gap the rest of the way en route to a 73-52 final.

Off the bench, Regis freshman guard Ty Cox led the way offensively as he scored 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting in his 23 minutes in what was just the second game of his collegiate career.

Sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon and freshman guard Jalen Brown would follow with nine points and seven points, respectively.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis junior guard CJ Reed paced all Rangers on the glass with five rebounds to go with his six points.
  • The Rangers bench outscored LCU, 31-15.
  • As a team, Regis shot 35.4 percent (17-for-48) from the floor.
  • LCU finished the day with an 18-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
