No. 3 seed Rangers fall to No. 4 ranked Orediggers in RMAC Tournament semi-finals

GOLDEN, Colo. — In a gloomy and drizzling Wednesday matinee between the conference's two top scoring teams, the Regis University women's soccer team was unable to overcome a high-powered No. 4 ranked Colorado School of Mines squad, falling by a 4-0 final in the RMAC Tournament semi-finals out at Stermole Soccer Stadium in Golden.

A slow start would be the Achilles' heel for the Rangers (14-5-1 overall, 9-2-1 RMAC) in what was a rematch of last year's RMAC Tournament title game as the Orediggers (15-2-3 overall, 9-1-2 RMAC) were able to slice through the snow flurries for two scores in the opening 22 minutes.

"Mines is so strong and organized that it becomes a real challenge if you get down early. That was the one thing we couldn't do and it happened and I think the frustrating thing for us is that there were no surprises in how they hurt us," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "But this will another opportunity for us to learn and grow as a team. And you have to play against great teams to do that."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orediggers got on the board in the 12th minute when RMAC Freshman of the Year Bella Campos netted her conference leading 16th goal of the season.

Colorado School of Mines would add a pivotal second score 11 minutes later, capitalizing off a turnover in the Rangers defensive third to go up 2-0.

"We were starting to get a little rhythm and there was some really good sequences where we were moving the ball well, but then you go down and the doubts can start to creep in," Frykholm said. "Playing this Mines team again, in a similar setting where there's a lot of stake, it becomes a big mental challenge at that point."

The Orediggers would hold that 2-0 lead at the half and seal the victory with two second-half scores, coming in the 51st and 56th minute, to punch their ticket back to the RMAC Tournament championship game on Sunday.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis senior Jillian Skurcenski produced two of the team's five shots on Wednesday.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Arucan made a career-high eight saves while facing 26 total shots by the Orediggers.
UP NEXT
The Rangers, who were ranked No. 8 in the last NCAA Division II South Central Regional Poll released Sunday, will now cross their fingers as they await word to see if the team will get one of the four at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament for the region.

Texas Women's University, Texas A&M International and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs all suffered first-round losses in their conference tournaments, opening the door for the Rangers to potential get the call on Monday.

"I'm really proud of this team. We've won 14 games and not a lot of teams can say that in the region. We are in the mix and it'll kind of depend on how the final numbers come out," Frykholm said. "Obviously, losing to Mines is not the worse thing in the world because they are very highly ranked and helps our strength of schedule. We'll wait and hope that we have a shot at an at-large. Until that draw comes out, you never know and I think we're had some great quality wins and performances this year so we'd like to think we're at least in the conversation for a bid to the tournament."
