Rangers fall in low-scoring Game One on the road against Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Regis University baseball team opened up a four-game road series against Pittsburg State University of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Conference on Friday, falling by a 5-1 final in a single, nine-inning contest.

Regis (3-2 overall) and the Gorillas (3-1 overall), third-place finishers in the MIAA a season ago with a 31-21 record, will resume the series at 11 a.m. Mountain Time on Saturday with a pair of seven-inning games.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers struggled to gain traction, offensively, on Friday as they were held to one run on three hits by a pair of Pittsburg State pitchers.

Pitt State struck first in the second inning on a three-run, bases clearing double that put the Gorillas up 3-0.

Regis manufactured a run in the fourth inning when sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton led off the inning with a triple and came home one batter later on a RBI groundout by junior, Cam Dalrymple. It was Dalrymple's team-leading sixth RBI of the young season.

Unfortunately, that would be the only run relinquished by the Gorillas' pitching staff as starter Zac Shoemaker went six innings allowing the one hit to Fullerton, while Tanner Leslie earned the three-inning save in relief.

Dalrymple (1-for-3, 1 RBI) and senior first baseman Matt Marlow (1-for-3) would each single to lead off the seventh inning, but a double-play and fly out extinguished the Rangers' threat.

GAME NOTES:
  • Sophomore right-hander Mason Ashcraft made his second start of the spring, allowing five runs, three earned, on just two hits while striking out four in 4.1 innings pitched.
  • Sophomore reliever Cam Bushnell pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief
  • Freshman left-hander Ryan Garcia tossed three shutout innings of relief, scattering three hits and striking out one.
UP NEXT: Regis and Pittsburg State will resume the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, sated to get underway at 11 a.m. Mountain Time at Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kansas.
