Rangers erupt for a 10-run fifth inning en route to a doubleheader split against Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Regis University baseball team earned a doubleheader split against Pittsburg State University on Saturday, rallying for a thrilling 14-11 win in Game One and falling by a tight 6-4 final in the nightcap.

With the split, Regis currently sits at 4-3 overall on the season and will be hunting a series split against the Gorillas (4-2 overall) when the two teams conclude the four-game set on Sunday.

GAME ONE: Regis got the day started with an improbably comeback as it erased an 11-1 deficit through four innings to storm back and steal a 14-11 victory.

The Rangers exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning, sending 15 hitters to the plate and chewing through three PSU pitchers during the rally. Regis took advantage of seven walks in the innings, finally pulling even at 11-11 on a RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton.

Sophomore utility player Adam Paniagua had a pair of RBI singles in the inning, and fellow sophomore CJ Difiglia delivered a two-run single in the frame, as well.

With momentum firmly back on their side, the Rangers took the lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run double off the bat of junior catcher Austin Hamilton. Two batters later, junior outfielder Levi Padilla would add another insurance run with a sacrifice fly to push the Rangers' lead to 14-11.

On the hill, the bullpen duo of graduate student Michael May and junior Ethan Sloan would slam the door on the Gorillas' offense. May tossed a clean bottom of the fifth with a pair of punch outs, while Sloan picked up his second win of the season by going two no-hit innings and struck out four.

GAME ONE NOTES:
  • Senior first baseman Matt Marlow reached base safely all five times (3-for-3, 3 runs, 2 BB)
  • Ten different Rangers would finish with at least one RBI.
  • Regis drew 11 walks as a team, led by junior Cam Dalrymple (0-for-0, 4 BB, 2 runs)
GAME TWO: The Rangers and Gorillas played another back-and-forth affair in Saturday's nightcap as the game featured three ties and four lead changes.

Regis held leads of 1-0 and 3-1 after the top of the third, plating a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly by Marlow and a RBI groundout from Dalrymple.

Pittsburg State countered with three runs of its own in the home-half of the third to take a 4-3 advantage.

The Rangers would even the score again at 4-4 in the top of the fourth on a RBI single from sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet. But the Gorillas would take the lead for good two innings later with a two-run sixth and hold on for the 6-4 final.

GAME TWO NOTES:
  • Regis had three players finish with multi-hit games, including Daudet (2-for-2, 1 RBI, BB), Difiglia (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and sophomore Vinnie Lagatta (2-for-4, 2 Runs).
  • Sophomore right-hander Dom Ramil was the tough-luck losing pitcher after he went 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two.
UP NEXT: Regis will hunt a road series split on Super Bowl Sunday when it takes on the Gorillas in Game Four. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Mountain Time at Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kansas.
