Blossom and Marlow homer, but Rangers drop Game Four of road series to Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Regis University baseball team concluded its four-game road series against Pittsburg State University on Sunday, falling by a 16-3 final in Game Four.

With Sunday's win, the Gorillas (5-2 overall) clinched a 3-1 series win, while the Rangers (4-4 overall) finished their first two road trips of 2023 at .500 heading into their home opening series this week against Fort Hays State University.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Pittsburg State got the bats going early, scoring a run in the first and second innings, before breaking the game open with a five-run third inning to take a 7-0 lead a third of the way through the series finale.

Regis sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet got the Rangers on the scoreboard in the top half of the fifth with a double that was bobbled in the outfield and let redshirt sophomore outfielder Joey Cicini score all the way from first.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, who pulled off a 10-run comeback in their Game Two win on Saturday, the Gorillas answered with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead out to 15-1.

The Rangers would receive solo home runs from junior first baseman Matt Marlow in the sixth, and a solo blast from redshirt senior Cam Blossom in the eighth — Marlow and Blossom's first home runs of 2023 — to round out the Regis scoring.

Blossom's home run came in his first pinch-hitting appearance of the spring.

GAME NOTES:
  • Four of the five Regis hits went for extra bases as senior third baseman Colten Chase added a double of his own in the third inning
  • Chase stole his third base of the season (3-for-3), tying him for the team lead with Nolan Johnson (3-for-4)
  • Redshirt senior left-hander Luke Luebker pitched 0.2 innings of clean relief, while junior right-hander Logan Deskin has his best outing of the young season with 2.0 no-hit innings and two strikeouts.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will return home for the first time in 2023 and get ready to face another Kansas foe in Fort Hays State University. Game One of the series is currently scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
