Regis baseball opens home schedule with split against Fort Hays State

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team played on its home diamond for the first time this spring Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against former RMAC foe, Fort Hays State University.

Regis opened the day with a 6-4 victory over the visiting Tigers and dropped a tight 13-10 final in Game Two of the series where the Tigers rallied for five runs in the ninth to steal the nightcap.

"Tough way to end the day, but the great thing in baseball is we get to come back (Sunday) and play two more games," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I am looking forward to seeing how our guys respond."

GAME ONE: The Rangers got the day started with a wire-to-wire win over Fort Hays in the opener.

Regis (5-5 overall) got after the Tigers early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly from junior outfielder Levi Padilla and a RBI double off the bat of sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton.

Senior first baseman Matt Marlow added a sacrifice fly in the second inning, giving the Rangers a 3-1 lead, and the Rangers had two more productive outs score runs in the third on RBI groundouts from second baseman Vinnie Lagatta and third baseman Colten Chase.

Lagatta, who finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and two walks, would add an RBI single in the fifth to give the Rangers another insurance run at 6-4.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Mason Ashcraft earned his first victory in a Regis uniform, going 4.0 innings and limiting Fort Hays to three runs on seven hits and striking out four.

Junior left-hander Ethan Sloan, who had yet to allow a hit in 8.1 innings so far this season, came in the sixth inning and slammed the door on the Tigers to pick up his first save of 2023. Sloan struck out three and didn't allow a base runner in his six-out save.

GAME TWO: The Rangers offense produced one of its best performances of the young season in Game Two, scoring 10 runs on a season-high 13 hits, five of which went for extra bases, but were unable to close out the sweep as FHSU rallied for the 13-10 win.

Lagatta (2-for-5) led all Rangers with four driven in from the leadoff spot, including a grand slam in the second inning, that gave Regis a 4-3 lead.

Padilla would also hit his first home run of the spring in the third inning.

Chase concluded his strong day with a three-hit performance in Game Two, finishing 3-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in.

UP NEXT: Regis will look to win the series on Sunday when the two teams clash again for a seven-inning, nine-inning doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Regis Baseball Field.
