Rangers erupt in Game Four, earn a series split against Fort Hays State

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team closed out its home-opening series on a high note Sunday, shaking off an early 11-9 loss to cap the weekend with a dominating 15-4 win in the series finale over Fort Hays State University.

With the Sunday doubleheader split, Regis (6-6 overall) also earned a series split with the visiting Tigers (7-5 overall), a former RMAC foe and now member of the Mid-American Athletic Conference (MIAA).

"I want to give credit to Fort Hays. They have a very good offensive club over there, one through nine in their lineup, and they showed that in Game One," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "We didn't finish that first game the way we wanted to, but there were a lot of good things and I stressed that to our team between games. I wanted us to focus on what we did well and build off that into the second game and I thought our guys did that."

GAME TWO HOW IT HAPPENED: After falling into an early 2-0 hole, the Rangers pulled even with the Tigers in the third inning on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore right fielder, Maxim Fullerton.

With the score tied 3-3 heading to the fifth, the Rangers' lineup erupted for 11 runs and sent 17 batters to the plate to balloon their lead to 13-3. It marked the second 10-plus run inning this season for Regis, which also accomplished the feat in a 14-11 road win over Pittsburg State on February 11.

"I really think it started with batting practice this morning. We changed our approach and were trying to get guys to use the middle of the field a little better. In the first game we had seven hits up the middle and we built off that in the second game," LaComb said of the 11-run outburst. "I think overall our guys were able to put together good at-bats, stay on the off-speed pitches a little better and were able to put together a complete offensive performance like we've been waiting on all season."

In the thick of things for the Rangers were sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet and senior third baseman Colten Chase¸ each of whom were still looking to hit their stride in the early goings of 2023.

Daudet (2-for-3, 4 RBI) launched a 3-run home run for his first long ball of the spring, while Chase (2-for-4, 3 RBI) hit a bases clearing triple to center as part of the 11-run fifth.

"That was huge. We need those two guys to be able to help us this year and they're two of the best infielders in the country at this level I would say pure skill wise. We need their bats in the lineup to be able to help us," LaComb said of Daudet and Chase. "It was really excited to see them put it together."

On the mound, Regis got a strong start from sophomore right-hander Blake Shepardson, who limited Fort Hays State to just one run on one hit over his final four innings of work. He finished the afternoon with 5.0 innings, three runs on three hits and struck out four to pick up his first win of the spring.

"Blake was attacking the zone more (Sunday) than his previous starts and when he is in the zone and attacking hitters, Shep is a very dangerous arm," LaComb said. "I thought he did a good job of pitching with tempo, attacking the strike zone and I think that's why he saw some success."

GAME ONE HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis nearly had a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, but fell by a tight 11-9 final in Game Three of the series and the first game of Sunday's twin bill.

Trailing 9-5 entering the sixth, the Rangers rallied for four runs to tie the score at 9-9 in an inning that included the first career homerun for redshirt freshman Nolan Johnson and RBI singles off the bat of senior Matt Marlow and sophomore catcher Adam Paniagua.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, Fort Hays was able to counter with two runs in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of two errors and a wild pitch in the inning, to steal the 11-9 final.

Marlow and sophomore second baseman Vinnie Lagatta, who batted leadoff for the Rangers in both games Sunday, each finished with three hits atop the order to pace the Regis lineup.

UP NEXT: Weather permitting, the Rangers are schedule to host the University of Mary on Wednesday and Thursday of next week in a pair of single, nine-inning contests. First pitch for both days are scheduled for 2 p.m.
