Fullerton's homer helps lift Rangers to doubleheader split against University of Mary

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team concluded its six-game home stand on Tuesday, splitting a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Mary that was highlighted by a gritty, 8-7, win in Tuesday's nightcap.

With the split, the Rangers (7-7 overall) remained at .500 during non-conference play and on the home stand (3-3). The team also got a chance to look at some young, potentially impactful arms in its doubleheader against the visiting Marauders (3-5 overall) of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

"We had a little bit of an up-and-down day for us. We didn't play catch or play good defense in the first game and that came back to bite us. But, overall, I thought our guys did the little things better (Tuesday) than we did over the weekend even though the scores may not have always shown it," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I was happy for our guys that they were able to finish that second game off with a win."

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO): In a race against daylight, and up against a pesky University of Mary squad, the Rangers were able to gut out an 8-7 victory in Tuesday's Game Two, which was called after the top of the 8th due to darkness.

After falling into an early 2-0 hole in the top of the first, the Rangers stormed back with four runs of their own in the opening frame, courtesy of two-run doubles off the bats of sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton and junior outfielder Levi Padilla.

That was just the start of a huge afternoon for Fullerton as the Steamboat Springs native finished a perfect 3-for-3 in Game Two, punctuated by a two-run home run in the home-half of the seventh inning; hist first home run of 2023.

"Maxim has hit a lot of balls hard these first 14 games and it was just a matter of time before it was going to happen," LaComb said of Fullerton's home run. "He's a strong kid, has a lot of power, and he ran into a fastball. It was exciting to see for him and it came at a really big time for us. If we don't get that home run, it could have been a totally different game."

Fullerton's blast would prove to be the different as, after Mary threatened with two home runs of its own in the top of the eighth, junior right-hander Logan Deskin was able to come in and slam the door, striking out two of the three batters he faced, to pick up his first save of the spring.

"I thing I was most happy to see out of Logan was his competitiveness on the mound. When Logan is that competitive and filling up the zone, that's when he's at his best," LaComb said. "He seemed more like his old self in that inning and it was really exciting to see."

In addition to Fullerton's big day, the middle of the Rangers' batting order was electric in Game Two as first baseman Matt Marlow was a perfect 4-for-4 out of the No. 3 hole, while junior designated hitter Cam Dalrymple was 2-for-3 with three runs scored out of the cleanup spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE): The Rangers dropped a heartbreaker in Game One of the doubleheader, holding a 5-3 lead through five innings but falling by a 12-5 final to the Marauders in seven.

Facing heavy winds blowing in from right field, each team struggled defensively in the opening game as they combined for eight errors.

Regis was able to take advantage early as it scored five runs, two earned, through the game's first five innings.

Senior third baseball Colten Chase had a RBI triple, while Dalrymple and Fullerton each added RBI singles in the opener.

Getting his first start of his collegiate career, freshman left-hander Ryan Garcia had a strong outing as he went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, only two earned, and struck out two while walking just one batter in his 96 pitches.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will have an extended break before they resume action the weekend of March 3-5 with a non-conference pod series against RMAC opponents.

Regis begins play with a single game against MSU Denver at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 3. The team then hosts two nine-inning games on Saturday, March 4 against Colorado Christian (10 a.m.) and CSU Pueblo (2 p.m.) before concluding the weekend with a road game Sunday, March 5 against Colorado School of Mines (12 p.m.)

"I'm looking forward to us getting some practice dates. There's a lot of these over these first 14 games that we've learned we need to get better at and this is going to be a great 10-day stretch to get quality practice in," LaComb said. "We'll want to get our guys dialed in before the pod series and conference play begins. We've still got a lot of room for improvement and I'm looking forward to these next 10 days."
