Moulin hits first career homer, Rangers battle tough in road loss to No. 13 MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team began a four-game RMAC pod series on Thursday, squaring off against crosstown rival and No. 13 ranked Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Regis went toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked Roadrunners for seven-plus innings, but a five-run eighth would help lift MSU Denver to the 13-6 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers (7-8 overall) came out swinging Thursday, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman outfielder Jack Moulin got the two-out rally started with a single before moving to second on a walk and coming around to score on a throwing error by MSU Denver (13-2 overall).

Regis took full advantage of the extra out as sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet delivered a two-run single through the left side of the infield to put the Rangers ahead, 3-0.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the proverbial "shut-down" inning after scoring would be a theme Thursday as MSU Denver answered right back with four runs of its own in the home-half of the second.

Trailing 5-3, the Rangers would pull even again at 5-5 on the first career home run by Moulin; a two-run shot in the sixth inning that scored junior outfielder Levi Padilla, who earned a leadoff walk.

As they did in the second, the Roadrunners were quick to counter with three runs of their own in the sixth to retake an 8-5 lead.

Regis would cut the deficit to two at 8-6 courtesy of an RBI double by catcher Austin Hamilton in the top of the eighth, but MSU Denver was able to put the game away with a five-run home eighth inning to seal the 13-6 final.

GAME NOTES:
  • Moulin finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored and the two RBI
  • Sophomore second baseman Vinnie LaGatta was the second Ranger with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 atop the batting order
  • Senior third baseman Colten Chase was 1-for-2 on stolen base attempts, making him a team-best 6-for-7 on the young season
UP NEXT: Regis will continue pod play action on Saturday when it hosts Colorado Christian University (10 a.m.) and Colorado State University of Pueblo (2 p.m.). While the games are against conference opponents, all four games of the pod series are counted as non-conference contests.

Regis concludes pod play at 12 p.m. Sunday with a road game against Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
