Rangers earn Saturday split, highlighted by season-high 30 runs in Game One win over CCU

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team earned a RMAC pod doubleheader split on Saturday, erupting for a 30-2 rout of Colorado Christian University in Game One and falling by an 11-4 final in the nightcap to Colorado State University Pueblo.

With the split, Regis moves to 8-9 overall on the season. All games during RMAC pod play are counted as non-conference contests. The Rangers will close out the four-game pod at noon Sunday on the road against Colorado School of Mines.

GAME ONE: Regis opened the day with an emphatic 30-2 romp of crosstown rivals Colorado Christian, pounding out a season-high 21 hits while scoring the second most runs in program history for a single game. The school record is 33 runs scored on March 21, 2021.

After briefly falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Rangers answered with two runs in the home half of the inning then blew the game open with a 12-run second inning; the most runs scored in a single inning for Regis this season.

Junior outfielder Levi Padilla bad a three-run, bases clearing triple, and sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet added his own three-run double in the inning to account for six of the 12 runs scored.

The Rangers tacked on to their lead with a six-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Padilla and RBI hits from senior first baseman Matt Marlow, junior designated hitter Cam Dalrymple, redshirt sophomore Joey Cicini, and freshman outfielder Jack Moulin.

Regis would then cross into historic territory with a 10-run fifth inning that included a grand slam off the bat of junior catcher Austin Hamilton; his first home run as a Ranger.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Brady Gilmore earned his second win of the spring after going four innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three.

Senior lefty reliever Zach Harstad tossed two scoreless innings or relief and senior right-hander Patrick Kennedy had a 1-2-3 seventh inning in his 2023 debut.
GAME TWO: The Rangers concluded Saturday's action with an 11-4 loss to CSU Pueblo.

Regis tallied three of its runs in the home-half of the second, with runs coming across on a RBI triple from Moulin, and error by CSU Pueblo and senior third baseman Colton Chase with a run-scoring single; one of the four hits on the day for Chase, who has now hit safely in six straight.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they would be unable to get after CSU Pueblo starting pitcher Tyler Curtis has he held the Rangers scoreless over the next five innings.

With Curtis holding Regis at-bat, the CSU Pueblo offense was able to orchestrate its comeback with a run in the third, a run in the fifth, and a five-run sixth inning to take the lead en route to the 11-4 final

Sophomore catcher Adam Paniagua finished 2-for-4, while Daudet added an RBI double in the ninth to help pace the Regis lineup.

UP NEXT: Regis will conclude RMAC pod series action, and its non-conference schedule, at 12 p.m. Sunday out in Golden against Colorado School of Mines.
