Rangers conclude non-conference play with road comeback win over Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — Behind a balanced attack from its lineup, and a sensational relief performance from junior left-hander Ethan Sloan, the Regis University baseball team rallied from an early 4-0 hole to storm back to win 9-7 over the Colorado School of Mines.

With the victory, Regis (9-9 overall) moves back to .500 on the season at the conclusion of non-conference play, while the loss drops the Orediggers to 3-8 overall this spring.

"I thought it was a good overall win for us. I was happy with the adjustments our lineup was able to make throughout the game. We continued to pick it up as the game went on and scored in five different innings," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I was happy with how we competed and how our guys kept answering and adding on runs each inning."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado School of Mines was able to grab an early 4-0 advantage through the game's first two innings before the Rangers countered with a three-spot in the top of the third, courtesy of an RBI single from senior first baseman Matt Marlow and a two-run double off the bat of junior outfielder Levi Padilla.

Regis would tie up the ballgame on a RBI single from sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet in the fourth and would take its first lead at 5-4 after Daudet and Marlow executed a double steal attempt.

Sophomore utility man CJ Difiglia drove in three runs over the middle innings, including a two-run double in the fifth, while Marlow added a RBI single and junior outfielder Cam Dalrymple tacked on a sacrifice fly to help pace the Regis lineup.

That would be more than enough run support for Sloan, who has experience as a starter but has primarily been used as a late-inning, high leverage reliever so far in 2023. Sloan commenced to shutting down the Orediggers' lineup over five dominant innings, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits en route to his third win of the season.

"Ethan has kind of been a Swiss Army Knife for us in the fact that we can throw him whenever we need him. We felt at that time we needed to stop the bleeding and give our offense some time to come back and get a lead," LaComb said. "We went one inning at a time with him. We didn't think he'd go five innings, we thought maybe one or two. But after each inning he felt great and wanted the baseball so we kept giving it to him. I'm really proud of him and his performance (Sunday) because it was a huge part of our win."

Graduate student right-hander Michael May put the bow on the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his first save of 2023.

GAME NOTES:
  • The top three hitters in the Regis batting order: Vinnie LaGatta (4-for-5), Zach Daudet (2-for-4) and Matt Marlow (3-for-4) combined for nine hits, seven runs scored and three driven in
  • Difiglia was the fourth Ranger with a multi-hit game (3-for-5)
  • The Regis pitching staff finished with 14 strikeouts, led by Sloan's 10
UP NEXT: The Rangers will now get ready for the RMAC portion of its schedule, which is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. Friday at home against Adams State University.

"Non-conference play was an up and down period for our guys, but I think it needed to happen. We had a lot of failure and adversity we needed to work through during these first 18 games that was actually really, really good for the team. We're now in the process of building ourselves back up," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I think we've hit the ball well in the last half of non-conference play and we've pitched better the last 4-5 games than we had early. Things are starting to come together and I like where we're at as a group heading into conference play."
