Chase two-run homer helps ignite Rangers comeback win over Adams State

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play in thrilling fashion on Friday, rallying for six eighth-innings runs to knock off the visiting Adams State Grizzlies, 12-9.

With the win, the Rangers (10-9 overall, 1-0 RMAC), move to 42-39 all time against the Grizzlies (5-13 overall, 0-1 RMAC), including a streak of 24 wins over the past 26 games in the rivalry dating back to the 2017 season.

"First off, I want to give Adams State a ton of credit. They came out and played very hard, their starting pitcher was effective and that lineup can really hit. But I'm proud of our guys that we found a way to get a win at the end of the day," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Friday's conference opener was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams combined for four ties and five lead changes.

Regis built an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, courtesy of a RBI single off the bat of junior catcher Austin Hamilton, who finished 2-for-3 with three driven in out of the No. 9 spot in the order Friday, and a RBI opposite-field double for sophomore leadoff man Vinnie LaGatta.

After Adams State took a 3-2 lead, the Rangers tacked on four runs of their own in the home half of the third. Freshman designated hitter Jack Moulin launched the second home run of his career, a two-out shot to left, to get the rally started.

Senior third baseman Colten Chase would add an RBI single and Hamilton drove in two with a single to make it a 6-3 Regis lead.

Adams State would grind its way back in the ballgame with a two-run sixth and four runs in the seventh to recapture a 9-6 advantage entering the late innings.
Regis answered the bell in the eighth, getting the inning started with a walk from junior outfielder Levi Padilla followed by a line drive homer to left from Chase — his first home run of 2023 — to trim the deficit to 9-8.

"That was a huge swing from Colten. I think he pulled 4-5 balls foul in the at-bat, but I felt he was seeing the ball well and he was really close to breaking through there," LaComb said. "He put a great at-bat together. It's awesome he hit a home run, it wasn't something we were expecting, but it was a big-time moment and big-time at-bat for a fifth year senior."

With momentum back on their side, the Rangers kept piling on as sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet delivered a two-run single to give Regis the lead back at 10-9. Lagatta would score on a wild pitch and Daudet trotted home on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Cam Dalrymple to cap the six-run eighth.

The visiting Grizzlies would threaten in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs, but junior left-hander Ethan Sloan was able to slam the door by punching out the side in the ninth to earn his fourth win of 2023.

Sloan tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of the relief and struck out five. He has now struck out a team-high 34 batters in just 19.2 innings pitched and is riding a 7.2 scoreless streak.

GAME NOTES:
  • Chase (2-for-5) was one of four Rangers to produce multi-hit games on an afternoon where Regis tallied 12 hits as a team.
  • Daudet (2-for-3, 2 RBI), sophomore CJ Difiglia (2-for-3, 2R) and Hamilton all produced two hits.
  • Redshirt sophomore right-hander Mason Ashcraft was solid in his first home start of 2023, going 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out five versus just three walks.
  • Regis stole four bases on Friday, two by senior first baseman Matt Marlow. The team leads the RMAC with 42 stolen bases in 52 attempts this spring.
UP NEXT: The Rangers and Grizzlies will resume their four-game series on Saturday with a pair of seven-inning contests. Game One of the doubleheader gets underway at 12 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field.
