Padilla's walk-off, 3-run homer lifts Rangers to Saturday split against Adams State

DENVER, Colo. — Backs against the wall in the bottom of the ninth, and in a race against daylight, the Regis University baseball team received a clutch 3-run home run off the bat off junior Levi Padilla to close out Saturday's action against Adams State University with a 10-8 victory and a doubleheader split.

With the Game Three victory, the Rangers (11-10 overall, 2-1 RMAC) will take a 2-1 series lead over the visiting Grizzlies (6-14 overall, 1-2 RMAC) into Sunday's Game Four finale, slated to get underway at 12 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.

"Overall, I'm really happy with our guys. I felt like we competed all day and we came back from deficits in the last two innings of Game Two, which I was really excited about because it shows they are finding ways to come back and there is no quit in this group," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "We've played in so many close games so far that our guys are getting comfortable in them. I'd like to not have as many close games, but I think these games are going to help us later in the year come postseason time and situations like that."

GAME TWO: Hunting a doubleheader split in the rubber game of the series, the Rangers would not go away after falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning.
Regis answered with two runs in the home-half of the frame on a RBI groundout from senior first baseman Matt Marlow and sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet scampering home on a wild pitch.

The Rangers would pull all the way back to even at 5-5 in the sixth inning on a two-run double by redshirt sophomore Joey Cicini, but the Grizzlies responded with a 3-run home run off the bat of Jack Dere in the top of the seventh to recapture the lead, 8-5.

Down to their final three outs, and with darkness creeping in at the 6:00 p.m. hour, the Rangers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the 10-8 victory.

Sophomore second baseman Vinnie LaGatta and Daudet each earned walks to lead off the frame. After Marlow was hit by a pitch to move LaGatta and Daudet into scoring position, they trotted home to score on the huge two-strike single from sophomore catcher Adam Paniagua.

With one out and two men on, facing an 8-7 deficit, Padilla would send Rangers fans home happy as he launched a 3-1 fastball over the right field fence for a walk-off homer; his team-leading third long ball of the spring.

"We were fortunate to get some guys on with leadoff walks to help us ease into it a little bit and put the pressure back on (Adams State). Then we had some guys have really good at-bats. Adam's two-run single was huge and he was on time the whole at-bat," LaComb said. "Then, obviously, Levi's walk-off home run was just huge. He's been a leader for us all year and he's a strong kid. He's a hard guy to strike out and that's why we put him in the No. 6 hole intentionally. We know he's going to put the ball in play and he's probably going to hit the ball hard."

Padilla finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, joined by Daudet (2-for-3, 2 R), Paniagua (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Cicini (2-for-3, 2 RBI) with multi-hit performances.

Freshman left-hander Ryan Garcia got a no-decision, but was solid over his final five innings of work, finishing with a line of: 6.0 IP, 5R, 4ER, 7H, 4BB, 4Ks.

GAME ONE: In Game One of Saturday's doubleheader, it was the visiting Grizzlies who earned a come-from-behind win, 12-10.

Regis got off to a hot start with a five-run first inning, which included a two-run single by Marlow, a two-run double by Padilla and a RBI single from senior third baseman Colten Chase.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Adams State lineup got going in the second inning with three runs and never slowed down as ASU scored at least one run over the next six innings.

Adams State took its first lead with a three-run fourth inning and was able to hold on for the 12-10 final.

Padilla was a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and three RBI to make him a combined 4-for-5, 2 walks, 5 runs scored and six RBI on the afternoon.

Chase finished 2-for-3 with three runs driven in and Marlow added a 2-for-4, 2 RBI performance to help pace the Regis lineup.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will go for their first RMAC series win of 2023 when they square off against the Grizzlies in Game Four. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
