Shepardson tosses gem, Rangers roll to 17-2 win in series finale against Adams State

DENVER, Colo. — Behind a career-best start by sophomore Blake Shepardson, and a methodical thumping from the Rangers lineup, the Regis University baseball team earned a dominating 17-2 victory on Sunday in Game Four of its series against Adams State University.

With the win, Regis (12-10 overall, 3-1 RMAC) earns its first RMAC series win of 2023 and extends the team's run against Adams State (6-14 overall, 1-3 RMAC) to 26 wins in the past 29 matchups dating back to the start of the 2017 season.

"The biggest thing (Sunday) was it started with Blake on the mound. That's probably his best pitching performance he's had in his career here so far. And when you can pitch and defend like we did today, life gets a whole lot easier for you," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I know we put up a lot of runs, as well, but I was very happy with our pitching and defense. It was much better than it had been the previous two days. It was great to end on a high note for our guys."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Shepardson stole the show for the Rangers on a day where they tallied 17 runs on 15 hits as the big right-hander was dominating on the mound.

Shepardson allowed just two soft singles through the game's first four innings and scattered seven hits by the Grizzlies throughout the afternoon. He struck out a season-high six, which included punching out the side in the top of the seventh, while walking just one hitter across seven innings of work.

"Blake had command of three pitches (Sunday), which is huge for him, because when he can be in the zone with three pitches he can be a really dominant pitcher," LaComb said. "He did a great job minimizing damage in a couple spots with guys on base and only had one walk, which was really great to see."

The Regis lineup did its part to give Shepardson and the defense run support to work with early as the Rangers struck for five runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of two errors and two walks in the frame to go up 5-0.

After a scoreless second inning, Regis continued to pile on as it scored two or more runs in each of the next four innings to methodically balloon the lead to 17-2 and ending the ballgame early after seven innings due to run rule.

Sophomore utility man CJ Difiglia had a career day at the play as he finished 4-for-5 with four runs driven in batting out of the No. 8 spot. Senior third baseman Colten Chase tied Difiglia with the team lead in RBI with four of his own, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs, four driven in and a walk on the afternoon.

As a team, the Rangers produced 13 singles of their 15 hits — Adam Paniagua and Austin Hamilton each doubled — and were 2-for-2 in stolen base opportunities as they chewed through five Grizzlies pitchers.

"We want to be a complete offense where we can do a little bit of everything. We want to hit, move runners and be able to run and handle the bat. We can also hit for power, which I know we didn't have home runs today, but our guys continued to put good at-bats together," LaComb said. "Really good day for our group. I think everybody in our lineup can hit, and we have 3-4 guys on the bench that can also be in the lineup any given day. We're happy with the depth we have with our position players."

UP NEXT: The Rangers will have a bye next weekend before returning to action on their home diamond on Friday, March 24 against No. 13 ranked Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Regis and MSU Denver will square off in a pair of seven-inning doubleheaders that Friday, with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. The two teams will then conclude the series with single, nine-inning contests on Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
