Rangers make late rally, but fall by 8-5 final to CUI in Game Two

IRVINE, Calif. — The Regis University baseball team was unable to quite dig out of an early hole Friday, having a ninth-inning rally fall just shy in an 8-5 road loss to Concordia University-Irvine.

Regis (1-1 overall) and the Golden Eagles (1-1 overall) have split the first two games of the four-game set, with the Rangers earning a 6-3 victory on Thursday, and are scheduled to play the rubber games at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED: CUI would strike first on Friday, jumping ahead 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run home run and extending its lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Regis got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when junior catcher Austin Hamilton drove in sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet with a RBI groundout.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the momentum shifted back to the Golden Eagles in the sixth as they plated four runs in the inning, and added an all-important insurance run in the seventh, to bump their lead to 8-1 heading into the ninth.

Regis would keep on battling as it sent eight hitters to the plate in the ninth, whittling the Golden Eagles' lead down to 8-5 following a pinch-hit, RBI single off the bat of sophomore Adam Paniagua.

With a runner on and the potential tying run in the on-deck circle, CUI was able to record the final out to halt the Rangers' rally and hold on for the 8-5 final.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with seven hits on Friday from seven different players, including the first career hits for Paniagua, sophomore infielders Dom Ramil and CJ Difiglia, as well as sophomore outfielder Nolan Johnson
  • Sophomore right-hander Blake Shepardson got the start Friday for the Rangers, going 5.1 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out six
  • Junior transfer Matt Engler tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning in his first appearance as a Ranger
UP NEXT: Regis and CUI conclude the four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader, scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. Mountain Time.
