Regis baseball sweeps Saturday doubleheader, earns 3-1 series win over CUI

IRVINE, Calif. — The Regis University baseball team capped its west coast road trip in style on Saturday, sweeping its doubleheader against Concordia University-Irvine with wins of 10-6 and 8-4 to secure the Rangers first series win of 2023.

Regis (3-1 overall) put all three facets together Saturday, manufacturing timely offense, quality pitching and defense, while also taking advantage of defensive miscues by the Golden Eagles (1-3 overall), who took three of the four games between the two teams last spring.

"It was a great way to open up. Our guys are excited and really proud of the weekend and how it went," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I think it was huge for our guys to be able to start the season on a positive note."

GAME ONE
The Rangers produced early season highs in runs (10) and hits (9) in the first game of Saturday's twin bill, while punishing the Golden Eagles for five errors.

CUI would hold the early momentum, scoring four runs in the home-half of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. It'd hold that advantage until the fourth when the Rangers answered with a crooked number of their own, plating five runs on two hits; the big blow being a two-run double off the bat of junior Maxim Fullerton.

Regis would add two unearned runs in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Levi Padilla in the sixth, to balloon its lead to 9-4 heading into the late innings.

On the mound, the Rangers used five arms to work through the nine innings, with sophomore right-hander Brady Gilmore earning the victory after he tossed 2.1 scoreless in relief. Gilmore, the RMAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year, allowed just one hit and struck out two in his 2023 debut.

Sophomore newcomer Dom Ramil, who recorded a hit and RBI on Friday, showed his versatility as he pitched 3.1 strong innings in relief, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out one in his first pitching appearance of the spring.

Pacing the Rangers offense was Fullerton as he finished 2-for-4 with a run score and two driven in. Junior utility man Cam Dalrymple (2-for-4), Padilla (2-for-4, 2 runs) and sophomore infielder Vinnie Lagatta (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) all finished with multi-hit games.

Lagatta, receiving his first two starts of 2023, would finish the day 3-for-6 with two runs scored and four driven in.

GAME TWO
The Regis offense kept right on rolling into Game Two of Saturday's doubleheader, tallying eight runs on eight hits in the series clinching 8-4 victory.

Holding a slim 3-2 lead through one inning, the Rangers methodically built their lead with two runs in the second, including a RBI single by senior first baseman Matt Marlow, a run in the sixth and two more insurance runs in the seventh, courtesy of a two-run single by Lagatta that gave Regis an 8-2 advantage.

That would be more than enough run support for the Regis pitching staff as it limited CUI to just four runs on four hits in seven innings.

Junior right-hander Dylan De Leon would pick up the victory after going four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five, while senior righty Caleb Ayers followed with a clean 1-2-3 inning of relief in the fifth.

Offensively, Regis had six different players record at least one hit in the nightcap, led by Marlow (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and redshirt freshman Nolan Johnson (2-for-4, 2 runs). The Rangers finished the day with 18 hits and just 11 strikeouts, rebounding from a tough offense night Friday in the 8-5 loss to CUI.

"We had to make some adjustments from (Friday) and I think our guys showed up with a better approach," LaComb said. "We were able to do some different things, offensively, manufacture some runs and get guys moving in action on the bases. We did some little things like that and, collectively, were more of a team offense."

UP NEXT: The Rangers will now prepare for another four-game road series next weekend out in Kansas against Pittsburg State University. The series is scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
