Rangers fall on the road to #22 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team had its mini two-game win streak come to an end Friday, falling by an 88-64 final on the road against No. 22 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

With the loss, Regis (10-11 overall, 7-8 RMAC) dips back below .500 on the season but still maintains the No. 8 spot in the RMAC standings a half-game ahead of New Mexico Highlands University, while the nationally ranked Mavericks (17-4 overall, 12-3 RMAC) remain a half-game behind Colorado School of Mines for third.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers played toe-to-toe with the Mavericks through the game's opening 10 minutes, holding their last lead at 16-15 on a free throw by senior forward Aaron Bokol at the 9:25 mark of the first half.

Colorado Mesa responded with a 14-3 blitz over the next four-plus minutes to build a 29-19 lead and increased its advantage to 41-27 at the break.

The Mavericks would maintain their double-digit lead throughout the second half to seal the 88-64 final.

Regis would shoot the ball well from the field on Friday, posting a 53 percent (26-for-49) clip, but struggled at the free-throw line as the Rangers finished just 5-for-18 (28%) at the stripe.

Bokol and graduate student guard David Simental, who was 3-for-4 behind the 3-point line Friday, would pace the Regis offense with 11 points apiece.

Sophomore forward Brayden Carter followed with nine points, while the freshman guard tandem of Vojin Mastilovic and Chase Mayo Harmon each shot 3-for-4 from the field for seven points.

GAME NOTES:
  • Colorado Mesa shot 63% (35-for-56) from the field on Friday, doing the bulk of its damage inside with 56 points in the paint
  • Carter led all Rangers in rebounds with five
  • Junior guard CJ Reed finished with five points and led the team in assists (3) and steals (3)
UP NEXT: The Rangers will be back in action Saturday when they take on Westminster College at 7 p.m. in Salt Lake City.
Westminster (9-13 overall, 8-8 RMAC), winners of three straight, are fighting alongside the Rangers for one of the top-8 RMAC playoff spots entering the home stretch of the regular season. Regis beat the Griffins earlier this winter, 63-61, in Denver back on Dec. 9, 2022.
