Rangers extend win streak to six with a Sunday doubleheader sweep of Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — Two days of weather postponements did little to slow down the red-hot Regis University baseball team, which extended its season-long winning streak to six on Sunday after sweeping Colorado School of Mines, 14-7 and 8-6, out at Jim Darden Field in Golden.

With the two victories, the Rangers (20-16 overall, 11-7 RMAC) have leapfrogged the Orediggers (17-18 overall, 12-10 RMAC) for third place in the RMAC standings with two more important games on deck Monday when the two teams resume the series with a 12/3 p.m. doubleheader.

GAME ONE: The Regis lineup did much of the heavy lifting in the series opener, cranking out 14 runs on 18 hits against an Orediggers' pitching staff that entered the weekend with a team ERA of just 5.81.

Regis scored two runs in the first on a RBI single through the left-side by sophomore Adam Paniagua —one of his team-leading three runs batted in for the ballgame — and a run-scoring hit-by-pitch for senior Colten Chase.

With the game tied 2-2, the Rangers tacked on two more runs in the third courtesy of a RBI double off the batters' eye in center from catcher Austin Hamilton and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Vinnie LaGatta.

Regis would extend its cushion out to 7-2 following a three-run fourth inning, receiving an RBI double by CJ Difiglia and another roped two-run single by Paniagua. Difiglia (3-for-5) and Paniagua would each pace the Regis lineup with three hits apiece in Game One batting in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots of the order, respectively.

Colorado School of Mines would not go away quietly, though, as the Orediggers answered with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull even with the Rangers at 7-7.

Regis would recapture the lead in the top of the seventh as LaGatta and sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet perfectly executed the delayed steal of home play. Daudet broke from first, drew the throw down by the Orediggers' catcher, and opened the door for LaGatta to swipe home to put RU back on top, 8-7.

The Rangers would add another insurance run in the top of the eighth on a Levi Padilla sacrifice fly before putting the game out of reach for good with a five-run ninth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Chase, Hamilton and Nolan Johnson.

GAME TWO: The Rangers took advantage of some early shaky Orediggers' defense in the nightcap, striking for six unearned runs in the first inning, and held serve the rest of the way to earn an 8-6 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep.

With a man on and two out in the top of the first, Colorado School of Mines committed back-to-back errors that led to the Rangers' first run of the rally, scoring Daudet who led off the ballgame with a double.

Regis took full advantage of the extra opportunities as the team would swipe three bases, and took advantage of a wild pitch strikeout that allowed another runner to score, to take a 2-0 lead without the benefit of a run batted in.

The Rangers then provided the exclamation point to the first inning with a two-run single by Chase and a monster, two-run home run for redshirt sophomore Joey Cicini — his first of 2023 — to deep left-center that ballooned the lead to 6-0.

Freshman left-hander Ryan Garcia, fresh off his RMAC Pitcher of the Week award, would keep the Orediggers at bay over his 4.2 innings of work as he scattered three runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out two en route to his second win of the spring.

As they did in Game One, the Orediggers would try to make a run back at the Rangers in the middle innings as they trimmed the deficit to 6-3 heading into the top of the seventh before LaGatta hammed a two-run homer to deep center, his third of the season, to gave Regis breathing room again at 8-3.

Junior right-hander Logan Deskin picked up his third save of 2023 after getting the final five outs of the ballgame while sophomore Dom Ramil pitched a clean 0.2 innings of relief in Game Two, as well.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis combined for 10 stolen bases between the two games.
  • Nolan Johnson had two of those stolen bases in Game One. After coming into the game as a pinch-runner, Johnson stole second and third base before coming home on the sacrifice fly by Padilla.
  • Sophomore right-hander Blake Shepardson got a no-decision in Game One after going 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walking five and striking out five.
  • The Orediggers committed seven errors to just four for Regis on the afternoon
UP NEXT: The Rangers and Orediggers will resume their four-game series with another 12/3 p.m. doubleheader on Monday out at Jim Darden Field in Golden.
