Marlow becomes program's RBI king, Rangers complete four-game road sweep of Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team continued its dominating April run on Monday with emphatic 12-8 and 8-1 victories over Colorado School of Mines out in Golden that put the finishing touches on the program's second straight four-game sweep in as many weeks.

Regis (22-16 overall, 13-7 RMAC) has vaulted the Orediggers (17-20 overall, 12-12 RMAC) for third place in the conference standings while extending its season-long winning streak to eight games in the process.

"This was a big series for us and I thought a lot of different guys stepped up. I thought we played better in all three facets of the game. Mines has a very good pitching staff so we knew our offense had to show up this series and I thought they did a great job of being tough and competitive in the box," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "We also received a lot of key pitching performances, our bullpen was relentless, and I'm really proud of the effort and toughness our guys showed."

Monday's sweep of the Rangers' nearby rivals will also be a day that senior first baseman Matt Marlow will not soon forget as the four-year starter out of Flower Mound, Texas inked his name into the program's record book, becoming the Rangers all-time leader for runs batted in (RBI) with four RBI in Game One of the doubleheader.

Marlow entered the day with 160 career RBI, trailing the trio of Nick Doran (1990-93), Andrew Newton (2001-04) and Dan Kozloski (2005-08) who held the previous record of 161. That would change in the top of the fourth inning when Marlow hammered a 2-0 fastball deep to left-center for a record-setting grand slam. The Rangers' first baseman, who also leads the RMAC in hitting this spring with a .467 batting average, would finish Monday with a total of five RBI, giving him 165 career runs batted in across 146 career games.

"Matt's very deserving of holding that record. He works extremely hard, is a great teammate and a great person. He goes day in and day out working on his craft and has the respect of not only his teammates, but other teams and coaches from around the conference," LaComb said. "I'm proud of Matt and I couldn't have asked for anyone else to have that record because he has put in the time and effort to make it happen."

GAME ONE: Marlow's grand slam was not only record-setting, but significant for the Rangers in their 12-8 win over the Orediggers to begin play Monday.

Deadlocked at 5-5 entering the fourth, the Rangers pulled ahead on a RBI single from sophomore Vinnie LaGatta. Two batters later, Marlow launched his team-high fifth home run of the spring to break the game open again at 10-5.

"It was a huge at-bat for us at the time to give us a little breathing room," LaComb said of Marlow's grand slam. "To set a record with a grand slam is really cool and I was just happy that Matt got a pitch elevated in that situation and executed. It was just another great at-bat from Matt."

Junior outfielder Levi Padilla, who was a perfect 4-for-4 in Game One, added a RBI double to left to cap the Rangers' six-run fourth inning.

Colorado School of Mines would briefly cut the deficit back to three at 11-8, but sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet drilled a RBI single in the top of the ninth — his third hit of the ballgame (3-for-5, 2R, 2RBI) — to help salt away the 12-8 final.

Regis freshman Jack Moulin (2-for-4), LaGatta (3-for-5, 2R, 2RBI) and redshirt sophomore Joey Cicini (2-for-5, 2R, 1RBI), who hit his second home run of the series — a solo blast in the third inning — all added multi-hit performances as part of 18 Regis hits in Game One.

Sophomore right-hander Brady Gilmore (3-2) picked up his third win of the spring in relief, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing just one run on two hits, while lefty specialist Luke Luebker and righties Dom Ramil, Michael May and Logan Deskin all registered scoreless relief appearances.

GAME TWO: Monday's series finale win of 8-1 was a pitchers' duel for six innings as Regis sophomore right-hander Mason Ashcraft baffled Orediggers' hitters over his six strong frames.

Ashcraft allowed just one hit — a solo home run by CSM designated hitter Luke Folsom in the fifth inning — while tying his season high in strikeouts with seven versus just one walk en route to picking up his fourth win of the spring.

Regis received solo home runs from sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton in the fifth, and another solo blast by LaGatta in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead into the last inning.

The Rangers then put the game out of reach for good in the top of the seventh as they sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs on six hits to blow the game open at 8-1. Junior outfielder Cam Dalrymple got the rally started with a moonshot home run to right field, his second of the season.

Fullerton, who was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, pulled a run-scoring single through the right-side. Two batters later, Daudet delivered a two-run single to right, outfielder CJ Difiglia earned a RBI on a sac bunt, and Marlow capped the scoring with a two-out RBI single to left that scored Daudet.

Junior left-hander Ethan Sloan worked a quick and efficient 1-2-3 seventh inning with a pair of punchouts to put a bow on the combined one-hitter.

UP NEXT: The Rangers, now just two games back in the loss column of second-place Metropolitan State University of Denver, will head back out on the road this weekend for a four-game set against New Mexico Highlands University (2-36 overall, 1-19 RMAC). First pitch for Game One is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

"I think we're getting guys in the right spots, the right roles to be successful. And I still don't think we've played our best baseball yet," LaComb said. "I still don't think we're exactly where we want to be, but there's that desire to get better. We'll look to keep this confidence up going into our next series."
