Fullerton and Padilla homer, Rangers extend win streak to nine in Game One win over NMHU

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Regis University baseball team, fresh off back-to-back series sweeps, extended its season-long winning streak to nine games on Friday, outslugging New Mexico Highlands University to earn a 12-8 road win in Game One of the four-game set against the Cowboys.

For Regis (23-16 overall, 14-7 RMAC), the nine-game streak is the longest since the team opened the 2021 on a 10-game win streak. As for the Cowboys, the loss dropped them to 3-36 overall on the season and 2-19 inside the RMAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers were able to storm out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and a 5-3 advantage in the third behind the big bat of junior outfielder Levi Padilla, who delivered a two-run single in the first and launched a 3-run blast in the third as part of a 2-for-3, 2 R, 5 RBI, 2 BB performance.

For Padilla, the home run was his fifth of the spring to tie him for the team lead with senior first baseman Matt Marlow and sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton.

A pesky New Mexico Highlands squad would not go away quietly, though, as the Cowboys rallied back to briefly take a 6-5 lead, and were deadlocked with the Rangers at 8-8 through six innings of play.

Regis got to eight runs in dramatic fashion in the fourth inning as Fullerton put his imprint on the ballgame. After driving a ball off the wall in deep right-center, Fullerton turned on the jets to leg out a two-run, inside-the-park home run that gave Regis an 8-6 lead.

Fullerton led Regis with a 3-for-6 performance out of the No. 2 spot in the order, scoring two runs and driving in two, and has now hit four of his five home runs this season over the past six games.

Regis would put the game away for good with a four-run seventh inning that featured a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Vinnie LaGatta, a two-run double off the bat of junior catcher Austin Hamilton, and a RBI single for sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet to balloon the lead back out to 12-8.

As a team, the Rangers pounded out 12 runs on 16 hits — including multi-hit performances from No. 1 through No. 5 of the batting order — and struck out just three times in 42 total at-bats.

On the mound, Regis sophomore right-hander Dom Ramil picked up the win in relief after tossing 0.2 scoreless innings to get Regis out of a jam in the sixth.
Fellow right-hander Michael May worked a scoreless 1.1 innings and handed off to junior left-hander Ethan Sloan, who pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the 12-8 final.

GAME NOTES:
  • Six different Regis players finished with multi-hit games, led by Fullerton's three hits.
  • Marlow, Daudet, Padilla, Hamilton and redshirt sophomore Joey Cicini each tallied two hits.
  • The Rangers scored multiple runs in four of the nine innings.
UP NEXT: The Rangers and Cowboys resume their four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader, with game times currently set for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Brandt Baseball Field in Las Vegas, N.M.
