Rangers' winning streak extends to 11 straight of Saturday doubleheader sweep of NMHU

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Regis University baseball team guaranteed itself at minimum a road series win on Saturday, sweeping its doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands University, by final scores of 10-3 and 9-5, to take a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Regis (25-16 overall, 16-7 RMAC), already coming off back-to-back series sweeps of UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines, continue to shine during the month of April as the team extended its season-long winning streak to 11 games; the longest winning streak since the 2004 team won 13 straight games between Feb. 28 and March 20.

The Rangers will go hunting their third straight series sweep when they take on the Cowboys (3-38 overall, 2-21 RMAC) in Sunday's series finale, scheduled for 12 p.m. at Brandt Baseball Field.

GAME ONE: Regis flexed its muscle in the first game, scoring 10 runs on eight hits — all eight being extra-base hits — in a commanding 10-3 victory.

Redshirt sophomore outfielder Joey Cicini got the power display started when he crushed a leadoff home run to left to begin the second for his third home run of the spring; all of which have come during the Rangers' current win streak.

New Mexico Highlands briefly took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Rangers stormed back to score at least one run in each of the next five innings to methodically put the Cowboys away.

Sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet homered to left to tie the ballgame at 2-2 in the third, his second of the spring, before freshman outfielder Jack Moulin gave Regis the lead for good at 5-2 with a three-run blast in the fourth inning.

Regis tacked on three more insurance runs in the fifth, highlighted by RBI doubles from senior third baseman Colten Chase and junior catcher Austin Hamilton.
Senior first baseman Matt Marlow, the new program RBI king, would add a RBI double of his own in the sixth before Moulin capped the Rangers' scoring, and his four RBI afternoon, with a run-scoring groundout in the top of the seventh.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Mason Ashcraft (5-2) picked up his fourth straight win with a complete-game performance. Ashcraft went all seven innings, limiting NMHU to three runs on three hits and striking out four in just 89 pitches. He also walked just one batter, giving him a mere two walks issued over his last 21 innings of work.

GAME TWO: The Regis bats would stay hot in Saturday's final game of the twin bill, churning out nine more runs on 11 total hits — six for extra bases — in a 9-5 win over the Cowboys.

As they did in Game One, the Rangers were able to overcome an early deficit by dominating the middle innings.

Trailing 3-1 in the second, junior outfielder Cam Dalrymple drove in the first of his three RBI with an infield single and came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.

A productive RBI groundout by Cicini scored Marlow to kick off a three-run third inning for the Rangers, punctuated by a two-run single off the bat of sophomore catcher Adam Paniagua.

Paniagua and Dalrymple, who added a RBI double in the fifth and a solo homer in the seventh to finish 3-for-3, paced all Regis players with three RBI apiece in Game Two.

The nine runs would be plenty of run support for freshman starter Ryan Garcia (3-1) as he tossed six strong innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out six en route to picking up his third straight victory.

Senior right-hander Caleb Ayers would handle the duties in the seventh to nail down the 9-5 final.

UP NEXT: Regis will look to extend its winning streak to 12 games, and sweep its third conference series in a row, when the team takes the diamond Sunday in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. out in Las Vegas, N.M.
