Rangers out-hit No. 16/21 Mavericks, but fall by tight 7-6 final in extra innings

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team put forward another great effort on Sunday, rallying back from an early 4-0 deficit to force extra innings against No. 16/21 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, their comeback fell just shy as the nationally ranked Mavericks were able to push across the winning run in the home-half of the eleventh inning to take a 7-6 win in Sunday's series finale.

Regis (14-16 overall, 5-7 RMAC) would out-hit the Mavericks (23-8 overall, 14-2 RMAC), 15-8, for the ballgame, and put multiple runners on base in the ninth and tenth innings, respectively, but were just one big swing shy of completing its comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Mesa was able to grab the early momentum with a four-run third inning and added two insurance runs in the home-half of the fifth to own a 6-2 lead midway through the contest.

Regis would inch back within two runs in the top of the seventh when senior first baseman Matt Marlow delivered an RBI infield single, scoring freshman outfielder Jack Moulin, and an ensuing throwing error by CMU would let a second run trot home in sophomore leadoff man Vinnie LaGatta.

Marlow would finish the afternoon 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs driven in, tying him for the team high in hits and runs batted in with fellow senior Colten Chase (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI).

Chase would be at the center of the action the next inning as he launched a no-doubt, two-run homer to left field that tied the ballgame at 6-6 in the eighth inning; tying him with junior Levi Padilla for the team lead in home runs with three.

The two bullpens would hold serve over the next six half-innings — which included a highlight, wall-scraping catch by Regis left fielder CJ Difiglia to save extra-bases in the ninth  until the Mavericks were able to break through in the 11th.

Colorado Mesa opened the 11th with a lead off single and took advantage of an errant pickoff throw that put a runner on third base with nobody out. Regis would bring the infield in, but two batters later the Mavericks' leadoff man Harrison Rodgers was able to lift a game-winning single to left field to seal the 7-6 final.

On the mound, Regis senior right-hander Patrick Kennedy had his best outing of the spring as he tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Junior right-hander Logan Deskin also fired a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen.

GAME NOTES:
  • Eight different Rangers finished with at least one hit, led by Marlow and Chase with three
  • LaGatta (2-for-3, 1 run) and Moulin (2-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI) also had multi-hit games for Regis
  • Regis pitching allowed just 27 hits across the four-game series
  • The Rangers' lineup produced 35 hits in the series
UP NEXT: Regis will look to build off its strong performances over the weekend when it heads home and gets ready for a four-game home series against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Game One is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
